Newly acquired black beauty… dog or a gem?

I’ve learned in my years of collecting that sometimes a rare opportunity comes along and you have to take advantage of it. Well, I’d been thinking about getting an addition to my collection of one when my pup’s mom became available… so now I’ve got a matched set. You can decide if Ruby is a dog or a gem.
Today was her first time helping me take pictures.

Maybe this is a dumb question but I’m not a dog person. Does the mother dog know that the younger dog is her offspring?
I have to imagine they do, but I'm not sure what it means. We first met up ~14 months after he came home, and they got along with each other very quickly, but it's hard to say if that's because they already knew each other, or because they both get along with other dogs they meet. That said, since they're so good at identifying things by smell, I'm guessing they somehow recognized each other, but whether it's a mother/child relationship or just "you're a dog I've met before" I can't say. Then again, dogs are animals where offspring go off and do their own things, so that's already different from humans where family bonds are much stronger and longer lasting.
