Thrifty Paul McCartney is spotted making his own guitar picks by flattening coins on a railway track
.
He's one of the wealthiest musicians in the world, with an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion.
Yet Paul McCartney has come up with a thrifty way to make, rather than buy, his own guitar picks as he was spotted creating DIY plectrums by flattening coins on a railway track.
The 77-year-old musician was pictured on Thursday placing a dozen one-cent coins on the Long Island Rail Road in New York’s Hamptons.
After a train ran across the track and flattened the change, he was seen collecting the pennies before returning to his home nearby.
Sir Paul cut a casual figure for the outing, teaming red shorts with a plain white T-shirt, whilst he showed his patriotism with a navy Team GB baseball cap.
He is likely enjoying some downtime after finishing a sell-out tour in July, on which he played 39 concerts around the world.
It comes after the artist revealed he has to relearn many of his hit songs as there are too many for him to retain in his memory.
Speaking to The Mirror, the singer-songwriter reflected on his extensive back catalogue - with some of The Beatles' early tracks at least 55 years old and Paul working on more than 1,000 tunes in his career.

I imagine the edges of those flattened cents are fairly sharp and may damage the strings on his guitars.

My friends and I all did it as kids... cents then, money was more valuable. One kid did a dime and a quarter, never found the dime. Cheers, RickO
This is more common than you might think. A lot of the old blues guys in particular used to do this with silver coins- some still do I'm sure- because it generated a desired tone when playing. Edges would be buffed, etc. and sometimes the flattened coin would be cut/buffed into the familiar rounded triangle.

Brian May of Queen just uses an unsquashed sixpence, and he made his guitar himself.

I hope Sir Paul knows enough to use pre-1982 cents.
If he was patriotic he would use British pennies.

My guess is that he has dual citizenship. I think he actually spends a lot of time in the US.
Besides, British pennies would be too big - maybe a half-pence would work better.
I made my own guitar pick as well... but not on a train track!

I'm quietly deciding whether or not I believe that is really him.
I just saw him in East Rutherford, NJ. And while I was wayyyyyy up top, he still looked a whole lot different than this bloke.

I spoke with Landis last year & he has elevated his picker's tool:

He was quite proud of this achievement, and I loved getting my #13 24k Gold 5c I bought on sale
Wow, thanks! I've been called a lot worse... I think that's the biggest compliment I've gotten in a while
)
It was fun too! Took a damaged WLH and turned it into a useful and pleasing tool, (it really does sound better also

Come on now.... Paul McCartney! I am sure he can source with multiple people any guitar and any guitar picks he needs at any time in any country every time. Good lord...
I’m sure it’s a quality and sound thing and has nothing to do with being thrifty!

Looks like Paul was having fun down by the railroad tracks like when he was a kid in Liverpool (if not a look-alike).
Guitarists are picky with picks and like to experiment. Paul plays mostly a pick with his bass, and uses picks for strumming and picking his Martin D-28, except for some songs that he plays fingerstyle including this great rendition of Blackbird:
