2007D Thomas Jefferson Gold Dollar Missing Gold Layer

edited August 4, 2022 2:14PM in U.S. Coin Forum

I searched a bag of gold dollars and came across this coin. At first I thought it was plated, after taking a second look I see no evidence of plating. It appears the gold layer is gone. There are areas of the coin on the lettering that gold color is intact. What do you all think?

It is plated. The golden areas are where the plating is gone.

The remaining remnants of the gold color does appear to be pmd. Buffed off or something. IMO. Peace Roy

You can see on Liberty's nuckles where it was scuffed the gold color underneath the silver colored plating.

That is what I thought too, and it could very well be, if that is the case one would see damage on the whole coin. I took a Sac, dollar and used my zooltool to attempt to duplicate that thought. I just used the Rim of the coin and learned there is a silver colored layer under the gold layer. If someone buffed off the gold layer I believe there would be more evidence of buffing, Here is the photo of the buffed off edge. Under the microscope it clearly shows 3 layers on a gold dollar. I don't see the usual mirco bubbles i have seen on other plated coins on the obverse and reverse.
Not stating you all are not correct. Based on this experiment there is no way someone buffed off the gold layer. IF it were buffed it would show evidence on the coin. Plated still an option. Investigation continues. The coin weighs 8.1 Grams

There is no silver-colored layer of metal in a regular presidential dollar. That means that someone couldn’t buff away a gold-colored layer to reveal a silver-colored layer underneath.

When a presidential dollar, or Sacagawea dollar is missing a layer, it usually reveals a darker copper color underneath.

This coin was plated silver (or some other white metal) and has since circulated, causing the original gold color to be revealed on the high points.

That is what I thought until I used my zooltool to buff the edge of a sac dollar and it shows 3 colors. The weight matches other gold colored coins. If its plated it should weigh more, if the gold layer is missing it should weigh less correct? I weighed it 5 times 3 out of 5 times it came to 8.1. Weights 7.9, 8.1, 8.0, 8.1, 8.1 so I went with the last weight.

Pres Dollars with clad layer missing will be about 6.0 g.

So I decided to rub on the Reverse edge of the coin with a plastic sanding file, which I hate to do, because I didn't want to damage it more. and It showed a gold layer under the Plating. Yes upon further investigation I believe this is a plated coin. Darn I thought for sure I would see those micro bubbles on a plated coin. Learning every day. So all of you who stated this is PMD Plating. Pat yourselfs on the back. Good Job. Just keeping you all on your toes.

This is UNTRUE. Plating is atomically thin and will add no measurable weight to the coin to the nearest 0.1 grams.

Agree. Modern plating techniques can apply it just a few molecules thick.
This coin's status was obvious; OP just needed to be convinced.

FWIW that damage that is on the letters and concentric with the edge is from a coin rolling machine.

Me do that on purpose, Me like to use Me instead of I. This has to be the worse coin website Me has had to deal with. Me first impression of a site that does not encourage postitve learning enviorment. This site has too many who think their smarter than eveyone else and prejudges individuals for posting coins they believe is beneath them. Thank you for reporting me. If the owners of this site tolerate individuals like you and Ricko who think its cute to make snide coments its not a very welcoming place to post coins. That is why me never refer anyone to post here. Yet me will not run away from bullies like you all. So if the owners don't see what going on shame on them.

No comment was made by me until Ricko had to make a snide reply, What is crazy you are all so star struck you can't see it or refuse to see it. Individual come to sites like this to learn and better understand this hobby. Individuals like Ricko who post these type of comments give sites like this a bad name. Me, I stand my ground and don't tolerate individuals who make snide comments, there is no place for that on site like this where learning should be taking place. Just because one might post a coin someone doesn't like or agree with, one shouldn't throw out sinde rude comments. Its truly a sad state of afairs this happens here.
