The Superbird variety was only the 1952 proof quarters right?

I was taking photos of a 1955-D Washington Quarter and while picking through them to get the better ones noticed this when I magnified one of them. Pretty darn nice looking S! But I think it is most likely a couple of small hits to the coin that ended up looking like an S. :(

Here is the pic that I zoomed in on. Pretty late die state it looks like.

Superbird is 1952 only. It can be found with had-engraved tailfeathers, which is an additional variety worth more than a Superbird with normal tailfeathers. Hand-engraved tailfeathers can also be found on 1953 proof quarters.

I think I can see an "s" as well. Does not make much sense as to why though. Will have to search my own stuff again!

FWIW, I just checked an UNC roll of 55-D and none have the "S" that yours does...Interesting possible variety you've uncovered

I have noticed that several NGC 1952 Proof Quarters with the S did not have the variety designation, I then read that NGC had stopped offering that designation in 2009(if what I read was true). Is this still the case, or has NGC restarted the Superbird designation?

I've cherry picked Superbirds for a long time. NGC may have stopped the designation, but I had one certified as a Superbird by NGC in July 2021.
