A true great on and off the court. On the court, he helped revolutionize the center position and won like nobody before or since. Off the court, he fought for racial justice despite the serious risks that entailed. He endured virulent racial abuse, including from Celtics fans, had his house broken into and vandalized by bigots, and had his life threatened for organizing an integrated basketball camp, among many other awful things. Despite all of that he never backed down.
