@asheland Thanks. I have 2. Only this one has the photo in it. I have owned both for close to 35 years now.

I find the coins that were altered when they were current money are interesting.

I bet positing it on Facebook or somewhere similar would get lots of people looking!

Wonderful. You might not know her name, but she's YOUR sweetheart now, and deserves to be cherished as such.

That is really nice - and a mystery... I wonder if there is any information on the back of the picture.... Sometimes there is....Cheers, RickO

They used to be called opium dollars because it was claimed they were used to smuggle opium. Actually, they were mostly used to encase a picture of a loved one and sometimes an XXX rated picture. :o

@PerryHall many people still call them opium dollars.

Yeah, the "opium dollar" nickname made these things seem so much more mysterious or nefarious.
But the reality is you could barely smuggle enough opium in a hollowed out Trade Dollar for personal use. Not to mention the fact that I don't think Opium was illegal in the United States until around 1909.

@Zoins No idea how to post it on Facebook. I hate social media anyways. Feel free to post it there if you want to.

Pretty much no chance to ID the person, unless their name is written on the back.

I have a couple of old albums with photos of relatives from the 1880s,
and often the city of the photographer and the date range of the photo are clear,
but even with that it's extremely difficult to narrow it down to one person!

Posting it to facebook won't work either, because none of her friends are alive....

There is a person on facebook called the "Photo Angel" who likes to identify old photos and send them to relatives.
But she won't start unless there is a name on the photo.
