I finally won one of these beauties, and for a really low price! Been watching for one to come along for six years (and for an affordable example).
As a learning exercise, I was hoping someone could tell me all about it. That would be more fun than simply googling the answer and provide a chance for others to learn about this unique... token/coin/commemorative? Purpose, designer, mint location, method of distribution, and so on.
From poking around on ebay I do know there was a silver Matte issue, silver Proof issue, and a Gold proof issue.

I don't believe these were offered as a gold issue, but I do recall the Full Step Nickel Club (FSNC) offering these for sale around 20-years ago for something like $35 per piece or $35 per pair. The price was likely per piece. Also, I believe you could request what number you wanted on your coin or your pair and they went up to #1,938 but total sales were around half that number, if I recall correctly. They originally came with two pieces of paper that were small, something like 3x5 and 4x8 inches, and these pieces had historical information about the design and artist.
I have a pair of these as well as an extra (third) piece from another serial number. My father-in-law has the matching serial number to my extra piece. These are quite cool and their prices have appeared to skyrocket the last few years.

More recently, like about a year ago, Ron Landis made some more restrikes and he polished out the FSNC 2002 off of Jefferson’s bust and he made some gold ones too. @coinsarefun posted about the restrikes and, when she sees this post will most likely provide better info about them.
I bought the originals when they first came out and bought the recent restrikes too, even a gold one. But I think he punched a small amount in another metal too, maybe copper, but I missed those ones

Yes, I am definitely familiar with the Ron Landis gold issue. I ended up purchasing two pairs of the silver issues from Ron, but then passed on the gold issue when they were offered. In hindsight, I wish I had picked up the gold one, too, to complete that little grouping.

Mr_Spud is correct when Ron Landis redid these there were some (I'm not sure how many) set up proofs struck in copper.

Seems like there are:
That was an excellent purchase price. I checked to see why it did not show up on my 1938 proof Jefferson search and they did not call it a proof, just a matte. If I had seen it, it would have cost you at least double. Oh well, there are too many auctions on eBay to see them all and you are a deserving buyer (unless it gets 'lost' before arriving).
I have a matching set of these also that I bought here or ats a few yrs back. I think they are pretty cool!

I was in total disbelief when I won, lol. I felt so guilty. I immediately sent the seller a message offering additional money and will send it when the coin arrives.
I actually did a “nuclear bid” on this one too.
I search every 1938,39,42,43,46 listing and Sift through a lot of junk to get the occasional cherry.
