A 2022 CRHunters dream scenario...
Hi guys, come back with me 58 yrs. to 1964.
Ok, take a short drive/ walk to your local bank.
Ok, pull out your wallet/purse. Ok, walk up to the teller and ask very kindly and politely. Ask them, "hello, can I please have a bank box of Quarters?"
Now, some of you guys may say,"banks wouldn't do this back then" or say, "are you out of your cotton picking mind? "
How bout it? Did banks even allow this back then? And if they did?
Think of that, WOW! Silver BU Quarters more than one can imagine.
Just dreaming back what it might of been like in those Silver coinage days.
Thanks

According to my calculator adjusting value (purchasing power in 1964 to today), that box of quarters would cost nearly $5000 in today's dollars. Kinda puts it a little into perspective

How about this?

In today's world, 2000 90% Quarters would carry a value of $8000!
Of course, that's silver prices today.
I don't know what Silver was in '64?

It seems amazing now, but then - and yes, I was around then, just out of the Navy with a young family - it was all silver dimes, quarters, halves.... and clad was about to hit.
Cheers, RickO
I have to tell you Joey, I'm a bit disappointed with this thread.
As I'm reading down on your initial post, I'm thinking to myself..............THIS GUY IS GOING TO SHOW US A BOX OF UNOPENED 1964 QUARTERS!!
That would not have been beyond the realm of possibility with your CRH Joey. 😉

First, I believe they used bags for bulk movement of coins. They did from the mint and I think banks also dealt in bags.
Second, common silver was not that big a deal even for some years after 1964. Sure, it was fun and surprising to find it, but the premium wasn't so high that it was an easy decision to hold onto a pile of it. The opportunity cost of keeping a ton of common silver coins was sometimes unreasonable.
The past always looks so great in hindsight.
To add another anecdote from the old days..
I recall a time in the 70s into the early 80s (pre Hunt Brothers) when I was actually conflicted by finding silver. Yes, it was fun t9 find and worth a little more than premium, but not so much more that it was really worth it to have a small pile.
And 40%?
I recall once sending a few dollars in mixed silver (including 40%) to a dealer by mail and they sent me umused postage stamps as payment. It didn't even merit a check.
Many members of this board remember when you could go to your bank and get silver dollars - for a dollar!
Believe me guys, if that ever happened, I know I would give away 200 Quarters to my friends on the forum!
Wow, can't even imagine that!

My 2022 CR hunter dream is a box of Washington quarters struck on $10 AGE planchets.
Lol,

Would you give 200 of those away?
I'm your friend, right?

What about half dollars?? What about boxes of silver dollars???? Now that, would be truly fun! Of course, Im not sure if you could get a box of silver dollars at the bank, but I bet you could find rolls of them pretty easily!
I just picked Quarters, in my imagination thread, as an example because I pick up quarter rolls from banks far more than any other denominations.

Besides, I love the last silver quarter's appearance and many varieties.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line. Why are we all talkibg about silver back in 1964, what about GOLD? Go to the bank and pick up a few $20 gold pieces, or $2.50, $5.00 and $10 dollar pieces.
I remember it well, I was 15 years old and no money!

The melt value of 90% silver dimes/quarters/halfs did not exceed the face value until 1967.
As previously mentioned, there was no such thing as "boxes" at the time (1964). It would either be rolls or loose bags.
Most key-date coins were removed from circulation in the late 1950s. And some key dates never really made it into circulation in the first place (1950-D nickels, for example). But I'm sure some great finds could still be had in 1964 if you looked through enough coins.
Sure, in saying that, say the silver value would be 23c. Wouldn't every quarter (90%) still be valued @ 48c?

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Could you easily get gold coins from a bank in 1964?
I think so, like I said I was only 15
I do remeber my dad going to the bank and getting silver dollars for my aunt and uncles 25th anniversary

True, your imaginative box would be all silver...but it would have cost you sooo much back then. You could buy a house for under 20,000 and a new car for just over 2000.... then why hold back, go back in time another 50 years, what would you find in your box then??
not often i find a fairly clean quarter in a bank box of bag marked new quarters.
Beautiful find!
