2003 P Maine quarter struck through struck fragment small brockage

2003 P main quarter reverse struck through stuck fragment looks like creating a small brockage. The obverse looks like it is struck through as well. I don't think it is pmd, from what I read and what I see maybe I am wrong. The examples from Numismatics and explanation seems to fit. It also looks to be struck a bit off center. let me know if that is correct or you see something different.

Was it found in a parking lot by any chance?

The problem with a lot of error or variety collectors today is that they think they can find something worthwhile just about every time they go through their pocket change. It’s just not like that. Errors and varieties are rare for a reason. Because they’re RARE! In the past 30 years I’ve gone through more rolls of pennies and other denominations than I can count. And in that time I’ve found 2 varieties, both doubled dies. Only 2! But not a single error coin. There are guys listing so-called errors, doubled dies and other varieties on eBay every day. They seem to think that there’s a fortune to be made by going through their change every day. It’s just not so.

  • The error coins is what I double check on to even see if they are errors. I did receive from the bank 6 unopened bank rolls of 1959 D pennies, 1 roll of 1959 no mint pennies, 4 rolls of 1960 D pennies, 1 roll of 1961 D pennies, and 5 rolls of 1963 D pennies. They were not hand rolled they were bank rolls that someone had written the dates on them. A lot of them were clean, some had toning spots on them most likely stored in someones drawer for years. Thought that was cool but kind of sad someone kept them all those years and hand wrote on them the dates to save but then just turned in. I like finding or at least trying to find the cleanest version of the coin. I am sure you guys have gotten rolls like that before.. I appreciate all the info

with this type of stuff being posted on this forum now, more than ever, i can safely tell you that when you look at both sides of your finds, they will give you information. what you posted not only shows damage on one side, but common damage on the other.

don't take it personal if we cut up sometimes (especially me). seeing this stuff continually is tantamount to going to an automotive forum and someone posting a tire with a big blow out and asking if it can be patched and still used. it would be like confusing a heart for the intestines for a doctor. the contrast is THAT stark here.

if you really want to learn quick, look through the threads for silly avatars (the default ones for the forum, usually indicating newbies) look at what they post and see how often it turns out to be something. less than 1%.

my advice for you noobies that have a tablet or pc or the like. create some new folders to start dumping images into. dump images of varieties, errors etc from coinfacts, reputable auction sites etc and then have at least one for stuff like this. eventually patterns will emerge and you will start seeing the difference. MAKE SURE one of these folders including some education on ddo, rpm, tdo, ddr etc. we don't mind helping to be sure and teaching but i know i for one, remember the path i took to get to the place i am now and it was hard won. spend time just plowing through images. there is almost NO better tool that comparison to whatever you have in-hand to the MYRIAD of high-res images we have access to except maybe a mentor.

I have spent 60 years searching through lincolns, nickels, dimes quarters and halves. Have found a few DDO's and DDR's(no important ones) but never, never a true semi rare or rare error coin. Now, honestly saying I was not necessarily looking for errors in most of that time. I still have 30#'s of Lincolns to go thru some day that I have just pulled out of pocket change over the last 40 Years. But I'm getting bored with it and have other things to do more important to me. Don't give up, especially if you are young. Keep showing your coins with questions and take a little beating every now and then, but do listen to the replies regarding what you need to do rather than what you are doing wrong. Good luck.

  • No I appreciate it and I am trying to read, watch video's, look at pictures, etc. I respect the knowledge others have in this area. It is a hard one for sure learning what to look for and really be able to identify PMD vs mint errors etc. I thank everyone for telling me and I appreciate the links that have been included, correct verbage to use, etc.. I didn't take it personal that is why I said LOL after the drug comment. Everyone has been great except for one person on another post that had said some things that were actually hidden on my feed but the comments were directed at him. So much appreciated...

  • Jim, That was very well said... Thank you

You have a good attitude and a willingness to learn and improve which goes a long way around here.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

  • Thank you again. I do want to learn and I don't want to insult the seasoned collectors or the coin world with inaccurate assumptions or wrong information. I respect the coin community too much not to try and learn from everyone, read, listen, and try to grow. I can't learn and grow only wanting to hear what I want to hear. I post because I want to hear if I am on the right track, someone sees something different and the comments given, has helped me quite a lot. I really do appreciate people sharing with me. You guys take the time out to look, comment and I thank you for that..

@Jlefkowith143 .... You have a good attitude. Remember, the collectors here were not born with all this coin knowledge... Just learning about the mint process and possible errors is a long study. Then specific series, varieties, mints etc., all takes time. It helps us help others when, along with good pictures, specific questions addressing the perceived issue is included. Remember, it is a hobby, so have fun, enjoy learning, and make friends along the way. Cheers, RickO

  • Thank you Ricko, I agree. So much knowledge everyone has here, it is amazing, mind blowing and fantastic. I appreciate all of you.... I hope you all have a great day. thank you again..
