Nixon Penny and getting Smaller smaller....

Looks like a real mini cent. Feels like copper!

Does anyone know the back story of this coin(token)? Who made it? How many were made?
(Evil Grin) Will PCGS slab it?

Those were popular during the inflation time in the 1970's. Would not surprise me if some enterprising group/individual created a modern version.

I got one of these in the same 2x2 when I was a kid in the early 70s. It's probably still in a box somewhere. I thought it was plastic, but that's based on an old memory so don't hold me to it.

They were a commentary on inflation, gas shortages, and Nixon's economic policies of the time. Anybody remember his PR program WIN (Whip Inflation Now). I think they made WIN buttons that you could wear to show your support.

I've had a lot of these over the years. They used to be on a little rack next to the cash register in various stores. I'm sure that many were sold. I saw one on my desk the other day, ebay is full of them.
I don't know about NGC certifying. You could try an 'Ask NGC' post.......

Yes, these were common in the inflation ravaged 1970s. I also recall, and still own, a couple of the WIN (Whip Inflation Now) buttons and you could get them mailed to you by the Federal government simply by sending a letter and requesting them.

The WIN buttons were part of the Ford administration. Not sure if the campaign started under Nixon.

FWIW, I've seen this idea recycled under later presidents, as well.

Plenty of guilt to go around, not just Nixon.

I do recall seeing these mini-cents.... Never owned one. Spent a lot of time from '69 to latter '70's working outside the U.S.. Coin collecting at a minimum during that period. Cheers, RickO
