As much as I love the NFL, I know that I will struggle with this one. I was born in 76, and my memory is hit or miss on things. So even though I would most likely know almost all of the players if shown their names, I can't identify them like this.

That being said .... I've lived in Cowboys country too long to not get that one. #12 Roger Staubach aka Captain America

Trying to date the advertisment, I guess expansion for Tampa Bay was 1977 so after that sometime.

Chiefs I'm saying Ed Podolak although I don't know if he would have been retired when the ad came out.

I'll just guess a few, don't want to hog them.

    Cardinals, Jim Hart
    Colts, Bert Jones
    Seahawks, Jim Zorn

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think I know at least 14 for sure but maybe more if I guessed on a few.

  • galaxy27galaxy27 Posts: 7,835 ✭✭✭✭✭

it's scary how many of these i know. clearly girls didn't like me growing up. i'll follow my friend darin's lead by adding just a handful more

    Eagles (17) - Harold Carmichael
Giants (10) - Brad Van Pelt
Saints (8) - Peyton, Eli and Cooper's dad
    Jets (14) - Richard Todd
Rams (30) - Lawrence McCutcheon (did you know this one, fire hydrant? did you??)

and if anyone here comes up empty on the Bears jersey, don't even think about sending me a friend request on facebook

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

Nope. I never would have guessed it. McCutcheon was a good running back. Not anywhere near great but solid and steady....A workhorse.

1983 catalogue. Much easier than the 1978 one above.

    hey Goldenage,
it was faster for me to rattle those players from your 83 catalog than typing them out... :)

    Redskins #7 Joe Theismann 😎

  • galaxy27galaxy27 Posts: 7,835 ✭✭✭✭✭

checking in at lunch. here's more:

    Chargers (18) - Charlie Joiner
    Oilers (7) - Dan Pastorini
    Patriots (14) - Steve Grogan
    Browns (34) - Greg Pruitt
    Vikings (10) - Fran Tarkenton
    Bills (32) - O.J. Simpson
    Steelers (32) - Franco Harris
    Raiders (12) - Ken Stabler

the four that groceryrack mentioned really have me stumped

the Falcons is on the tip of my tongue

the Bucs is driving me crazy because it feels like it should be 63 (Lee Roy Selmon), but it's 61 and idk who the h that is

Bob Griese, Dolphins hasn't been mentioned yet.
Of course Walter for the Bears but I think everyone just took that one for granted.
Galaxy actually did mention Ken Anderson, Bengals in a roundabout way so he got that one.

The ones that remain that haven't been mentioned I do not know without trying to look it up online.

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭✭✭

I can only think of Floyd Little for Broncos but I don't think he was number 24, I think he wore 32.
I will look him up on footballreference and confirm.

Bronco is not Floyd Little. He retired in 1975 and his number was 44.

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭✭✭

The only LIons I could think of were Lem Barney (all time great) and Mel Farr.

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭✭✭

Here is my question about the Redskins jeresey #22.

Who would the Redskins have had at the time that would have been better
than Charley Taylor #42 or John Riggins #44?

  • GroceryRackPackGroceryRackPack Posts: 3,203 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm still stumped on the Redskins & Packers...
I had to cheat with the Lions...Charlie Sanders

um, we still have yet to tackle #14 for the Chiefs. is the resident KC contributor stumpified?

at first i wanted to say Bill Kenney, but I believe he was 9

would you like to borrow my flask @Darin ?

    hey Goldenage,
    Cool topic,
tonight is the All Star game and today we're talking about football jersey's from the old Sears - JC Penney catalogs...
    How cool is that.... :)

I did guess Ed Podolak in my first post. Incorrect? I still remember watching 'the longest game' between
the Chiefs and Dolphins on Christmas day at grandma's house and Podolak had a career game.
The only thing is I don't know if he was retired when these jersey's came out but I distinctly remember he was #14.

I totally missed your KC educated guess in your initial post. just looked it up and you are very much correct. well done mate.

btw I'm not at all surprised that no one here can guess 61 for Tampa. after all, this was the 77 Yucs we're talking about. they won zero games in 76 and I think one or two in 77, so naturally their donation to the cause was some obscure guard that no one can remember

OK I cheated on the Redskins #22 and found the answer.

    Mike Thomas - running back
He played for the Skins from 1975-80. So correct time frame.
I don't even remember him but he averaged almost 1,000 yards rushing his first three seasons.

I think all we need is 84 from the Packers... :)

ok I'm moderately upset. just looked it up and I was on the right track. I said earlier that 61 for Tampa feels like it should be Lee Roy Selmon, except he was 63. well, 61 was his brother........DEWEY.

I don't know anything about the 1980 Sears Catalog...... But I'll say this.....Vince took the Rams to the Super Bowl..... Long ago.... It was a miracle..... He beat the COWBOYS in the playoffs!!!!!!!!
And.....He is a very nice man.....He mingles with the crowd at Ram games.....PR stuff....so what..it's a good thing! The Hydrant girls, young and not so young, love him! Good guy!

I'm not jealous......they love me even more!

I see 17 on Bears Saints and Eagles.

    I don’t see Steelers 17.

I think 32 is Steelers and her arms are a little different from 17. Just a guess.

17s arm sleeve next to Earls #3 looks different than Franco’s arm band.

Looks more like Saints, or just a generic jersey.

the 17 to the left of Earl is Billy Kilmer (Redskins)

the 17 two rows beneath is Harold Carmichael (Eagles)

the 17 far left is Brian Sipe (Browns)

You and everyone else had to.🙂

I think your beloved Franco Harris is the only three appearance player for
    78,80, and 83 catalogues
