Coin sent back to PCGS to add Overton number to it question….

The coin was graded AU55 by PCGS with a CAC bean. The request to PCGS was to add the Overton number to a label. The original slab number has gone inactive, making me think they have given it a new number. Would they give a new slab number if they just added the Overton number? Or did they possibly upgrade it as well?

If they are breaking the coin out of the holder for a regrade it will get a new slab number.
I didn’t think a regrade was requested. The auction house I made the request to was asking to have the Overton number added to the label. This would have required PCGS to crack the slab open. Would they as a matter of course also evaluate it for a different grade?
You think they requested a reholder with a variety attribution. Does the Overton number change the PCGS coin number? If so, it would get a new cert number. Otherwise, it should have the old cert number.
I ask because the original slab number is no longer working in the registry.
What does PCGS say about it?
As far as cert numbers go: On a reconsideration (that is Not what is being done here but using for an example) where the coin is evaluated in the holder and then determined not to upgrade and returned in the same holder, the cert number will (usually) be de-activated at some point and then re-instated.
So I don't think one can conclude much just knowing a cert number has been de-activate as it could just be a process step.

Don’t know, i sent an email today and asked.
If it was sent in under a re-holder/Variety, it should come back with the same cert number. However, while working on it, the number could show as invalid.
