Adhesive removal on Morgan

logger7logger7 Posts: 8,675 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm trying to remove adhesive or glue from this Morgan. I'm soaking it in acetone, wonder if there is anything stronger? Upper right edge. Would heating the acetone to 150 or so or lowering the temperature change the effect? Looks like xylene may be available in a hardware store too.

Also, 70% Drugstore alchohol works great, will not remove any toning..

Will using the nail of a finger to scrape off glue cause a scratch? Someone said a thorn from a rose is good.

For copper, yes. For silver, no.

Just let it soak in the acetone.

Acetone is the proper choice, but it’s highly flammable and explosive. It has a very low flash point.

I'd try Ronsonol. $1.97 for a bottle at WallyWorld. Great for removing sticky stuff.

Vegetable oil works good, Then rinse with acetone.

    Do not heat acetone!

    Especially with an open flame😜

I use Xylene a fair amount and I really like it. But for glue or adhesive residue, an acetone soak is the best, followed by gently rolling a Q-tip across the coin to pick up remaining residue.

Correct, use a Q-tip and NO RUBBING, Rolling is fine. Lube it up with acetone.

Acetone, let it soak overnight. Glass vessel, foil cover. Patience. No rubbing. Good luck. Peace Roy

Thanks for the advice, going on the second day for soaking and used a Q tip with a little pressure on the glue residue, there are some hairlines underneath the glue, maybe someone was trying to hide them.

Use 100% acetone.... it will remove all organics. Do not heat it. Cheers, RickO

Acetone is a polar solvent and will work on most organics. Xylene is a non polar solvent and will work on many of the things that Acetone either takes a while or won't touch.

Acetone is my first choice, but I have xylene to use when needed.

Several days of acetone, no real progress. I tried boiling water too. I'm having a little trouble assessing the thin layer of adhesive.

    Try the alcohol..

Looked at it more closely with the dealer I bought the raw coin from today; thinking was that it was struck through grease. So probably not a good grade if it gets a numerical grade at all.
