I finished my Buffalo Nickel set!

JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,910 ✭✭✭✭

I decided not to include the 1918-D/17, 1937-D 3 legged, and 1938-D/S. Just a regular date/mm set. I had a blast getting back to raw album collecting, and I really like the LOC albums.

Looks great! That was one of the first sets I built and I had fun with it. My last one was the '13S type 2, which one was yours?

Either VG-VF Barber Halves, or a type set.

I also like the idea of doing a set of British Shillings from each king/queen. I know nothing about coins from England having been strictly a US coin collector, so some book learnin’ is in order before starting that set.

Congrats, great statement for a collector. I finished my 3rd set a couple of years ago and still can't stop buying them. Love me some buffs.

I vote for a type set, many to choose from
    Good luck

Your set is spectacular! I especially liked the 1915, 1916-D and 1916-S from how I interpreted the images. It was truly delightful to see a well-matched set in a vintage holder. Great job.

Still enjoy Album collecting. I searched for an older Dansco Buffalo album which did not include the 18/7 or 37 3-leg slots. So it is 100% complete.

Well you sure are ready to help calm down a lot of astronauts! You know, that line from Armageddon where Truman (not the President) promises a Buffalo nickel if he'd calm down just a little bit?

I actually do have three Buffalos of my own...one my grandma had, and two I found roll hunting (sadly one of those didn't have the year on it)...as for the one with the year on it especially I can't believe someone was actually crazy enough to spend one at face value. I mean I always thought even among non-coin collectors Buffalo nickels were a big fan favorite and American icon.

Thanks. Just two months. Couple coin shows where I got to look through A TON of coins helped. I also went down to my LCS and sat for an hour going through their boxes of Buffalo nickels. I was really trying to find a particular common look for these.

I’m so used to buying PCGS coins online. It was a totally different experience with these raw buffalos. I did buy some on eBay, but really wanted to try to get back to how I used to collect as a kid (aside from collecting from change).

A few of the ones I bought online don’t quite look the way I want, so I’m sure I’ll replace those at some point. They were just too cheap to bother with a return.

It was refreshing to learn how to grade buffs, but in a more general sense (i.e. nice VG instead of a VG10+ with CAC). Of course there’s nothing wrong with TPG grading. I just got burnt out obsessing over 65 vs. 65+. I’m a math teacher, and numbers just take over my focus too quickly.

Love the set and love the album! Someone local commissioned me to make a similar book with varieties of their choosing. I like that you took advantage of the opportunities at local shows and your LCS to find all the coins you wanted, made it simple, and still had plenty of fun and enjoyment with it.
