What do you think of this statement regarding coin collecting?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,204 ✭✭✭✭✭

"Classic coins are meant to be respected, not trashed. Legacy dealers and collectors are intended to be honored, not forgotten.
People who blindly dismiss reminders of history deserve to suffer the consequences thereof.
An evolving hobby need not have the lack of courage to cannibalize its own culture, tradition, and pride but to look forward to protecting future generations of collectors by being honorable today."

Yes, it is likely true but what is it in reference to?

The thread regarding the overpriced silver eagles got me thinking a bit.
Perhaps there is a bigger picture rather than keeping the blinders on and thinking only of today.

Should we posthumously prosecute those who have molested coins in the past? The 1870-S dollar coming up in legends auction is a prime example!

That’s sort of what I was trying to ask - was it a response to a comment or action of some type, or just an isolated statement, somewhere?

The statement regarding coin collecting contains honorable goals. But sadly, I think it’s somewhat unrealistic and could have been worded in a more down to earth fashion.

    odd

The two paragraphs seem a little incongruous.

And the word "cannibalize" isn't a good component. I read the statement twice and both times that word soured me a bit. It's a distraction.

I get it and I like it.
I'm not nor never will be a journalist so how it is written doesn't faze one bit :)

I thought about hitting the like button, but the more I read it, the less sure I was about the main focus of the statement. If it is just saying respect classic coins and do not disrespect them, ooook? Then does it say respect the hobby and don't disrespect it, ooooook? Or is it saying respect classic coins or else, maybe? Then the last sentence, kind of bums me out.

I’ve always heard that it’s just a bunch of old men sending packages back and forth in the mail. Unfortunately that’s how a lot of people see it.

Your statement doesn't say anything bout momma, or trains, or prison, or truck or getting drunk... oh wait sorry, that's a Country & Western song...

Well…I think we’re the ‘Choir’ so to speak. Context would inform how it’s interpreted too.

It might be fun to put together a list of the 10 coins most likely to put one at risk if “blindly dismissed”.

People can have an opinion about how the hobby - or anything - should be, but nobody cares much, really. It will evolve as it will, largely oblivious to the thoughts and desires of even the most influential individuals. Visionaries like QDB and JA leave their mark for sure, but the hobby transcends what happens in the span of a single career, no matter how distinguished.
