What do you do with coins that don't fit your collecting goals?

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭✭✭

From left over mint set and proof set singles, unwanted modern coin coin collections to roll finds and estate sale lot purchases and culled silver, what do you do with the extra stuff that no longer fits your goals? eBay blowout sales? BST? YN gifts??

Spend them or just throw them back into the dump pile. There's are a lot mint and proof set coins (NIFC) broken out and just spent. I hold all the melt value silver.

I keep all the old silver, and the wheat cents whenever I get them. Other odd coins I have purchased go into a coin cabinet. I liked them, purchased them, so I keep them. Cheers, RickO

Giveaways to fellow Forum members whose handles begin with DBS....... ;)

Seriously, the above suggestions are spot-on. My boys & I have received help in the past staying current (especially with otherwise-NCLT halves & dollars) with our collections thru trades/purchases with other Forum members with such extras, and have passed along anything we've had in the way of extras to newbies on the Forum looking to start or expand their collecting as well - - although usually in the form of older coins vs anything from Mint/Proof sets. That's what I love most about this Forum.

I sell the coins that do not meet my collecting goals, and use the money to buy coins that I would like to collect. I also have gave a lot of old silver to grandkids as gifts.

  • silverpopsilverpop Posts: 6,699 ✭✭✭✭✭

    sell them online

  • DBSTrader2DBSTrader2 Posts: 3,487 ✭✭✭✭

Post what extras you have on the Forum. You may be surprised by the number of YN's or other members here who are looking for just the things you are looking to dispose of. In our case, we're not YN's (pretty much the opposite), but as we try to stay current with each year's releases, finding someone who has any halves/dollars available is especially helpful.

Resell on ebay, trade with contacts, other collectors, or members here when possible.
I strongly prefer trading over selling/buying.

You can also give them away as bonus coins if you sell coins on places like eBay. I used to do that years ago when I sold coins on eBay and Overstock and I think it helped me in getting repeat business.

I give all my duplicates to young and old collectors. I only have duplicates of ASE/AGE and silver dimes (Bullion) , and a few cents (Indian and Lincoln), all else I gave away. Some came in a set I purchased others were upgraded. I have sold a few sets (V Nickels) and some Peace Dollars, but on average I gave away most items under $20

No - Goes into inventory for RETAIL.

Collections / Estates I take it all. If it’s rolls of clad circ junk at face just spend it, Burger King.

Retail for online store & Shows. Junk sell at shows. I have a collector coin album (shows) for everything non slabbed and price from a $1 and up. Sell a lot of material less than $10 pays (realize good markup) my show expenses, food. Sell a lot of raw coins at shows. Once material goes over $60-$100 many coming in bourse room priced out. Some listed in online store too. Currency mainly to the approipate stack for shows. Recent show 75pct my sales currency both graded and raw. Currency is good material strong markup realized. One big customer at shows buys at least $700 worth sometimes $1500. currency both graded and raw.

I’m very inconsistent. Depending on what it is, I’ll either keep it or spend it or try to sell it.

I have quite a bit of dark side material that doesn’t fit my core collecting interests, but it’s cool (to me) and wouldn’t bring that much if I sold it, so I hang onto it.

I usually sell them as odd lots on eBay. However I do like the idea of giveaways on the forum

  • Steven59Steven59 Posts: 9,019 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just set them off to the side, designate them as "Sellables", and in times of need, (like now buying gas, food, or paying the Gas Heating bill this winter........), then I can just start selling them as needed.

I've heard of these "goal" things before, They sound more trouble than they're worth. B)

No "goals" = no "coins that don't fit your goals". All coins fit in my collection, ancient to modern, foreign to local.

I usually use eBay to dispose of unwanted material, and use the proceeds to fund new purchases. Rinse, repeat.

I collect mint state and proof modern United States coins, currently have nearly all issues from 1938 to 2022, and am working on 1937 at the moment. I do have five extra mint state Half Dollars and five extra mint state Quarters and a tube or two of lower denominations, all in air tite holders. I just hold on to them, they are beautiful coins.

  • ChrisH821ChrisH821 Posts: 6,569 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hoard them like a dragon. Unless you want to use the tied up funds for something else, in that case I usually sell them to my LCS because I like them, or I use GC. Have not done any ebay sales in a while, I might try my hand at that again soon.

Either ebay or the BST if it's material that I'll use to fund a "new (hopefully more refined) direction". If it's an impulse buy, a coin I've long since upgraded, or change finds, I'll do a giveaway.

Coins with little value go into a box, including leftover foreign from trips. One day I may take the box to a show and give it away, else, it will be my kids' problem, along with all the other junk accumulated over the years. Coins worth the trouble to sell are sold.
