1918 buff newP with CHD images

This one was an early happy birthday to me pickup, and like the 14-D I shared recently, wasn't a date I was actively pursuing. The 1918 is certainly one of the better Philly dates in the series, according to the books, my own experiences, and several folks on these boards I correspond with, which was among the last philly dates they filled, or are still on the search for.

The incumbent 1918 I bought many moons ago from Angel Dees at a Baltimore show, a 64 in OGH that I thought enough about to submit for reconsideration at one point (no dice). I sprung for this one as it has more prominent toning that has become a better match for my set over the years. While the 1918-P isn't known as being particularly strike deficient, this one is nicely and deeply imprinted on the obverse. The reverse is all about the color, with some very nice rainbow bands and a more overall amber look than the image suggests.

Comments welcome. Would love to see those other 1918 buffalo nickels from other members too!

Nice color and strike on that one.
Here's mine, also a 64. I cracked it out of a PCI holder and sent to PCGS.

Not sure if you did as well, but I had a hard time finding a 1918 that I liked.

The OP coin shows clearly one the Mints efforts to strengthen the date on Buffalo Nickels early on. The 8 in the date is bolder and slightly larger than the other numerals.

Nothing that was done fixed the problem, and this "remedy" only saved the last 2 numbers from oblivion.

You can find a nice example if you look around for awhile. A good percentage (but not all) of them come with a poorly defined knot and central details.
