St Gaudens DE Questions and Advice

Here are two Saints, and I am thinking of purchasing one of them.

Which one should I buy?
and any comments on your pick.

How much would you pay for these coins ?

Would you kindly estimate the grade on each of the coins.

THANKS ! Appreciate your time.

A has the less chatter of the two, though B has a slightly better luster from the photos (which may or may not be representative of what they look like in hand). I would have to pick A if pushed.

They both appear to be MS63, guessing PCGS from the brackets holding the coins in the photos.

    Don’t pay more than $2,000.00.

Coin A by just a bit. B seems to have more coppery tone, but A has a nice overall golden appearance.

A PCGS MS63 Saint would be a real bargain for $2000.

    Not for me. :D

    Sorry, that was mean.

For what it's worth, I just checked eBay and Perry is correct. I might be a little low on price, but if you can get it for $2,000 and it is a 63, go for it.

Unless I’m seeing something different, they look gem. And both look excellent.

First place I look is the nose. Both are good there. Then I look at the fields. Neither are bad, but fields cleaner on A. Seeing marks on the reverse rays on A, and marks on lady liberty on B. Both have minor marks on the left side of the sun.

All in all, they are close and probably the same grade. My best guess is 63, but I could be wrong.

I’d be surprised if the first one, in particular, didn’t grade better than 63.

You could be correct. That's the fun of this place. If I am wrong, I learn. :)

I am sure OP will give us a reveal.

Just curious, which do you all believe is higher grade? Coin A or my lone example:

Asheland- you make a valid point. I saw that coin on your YouTube and see the grade and sticker.

Exactly, and the coins above appear to have less chatter in the fields.

You make a very good point.

Just pulled a photo, albeit a crapy iPhone photo, of my MS64 1908 Motto and see it has chatter too. Though I do love the luster in spades. ;)

Sweet coin! It’s cool you have the same coin. :) The 08 mottos are tough!

I'm just on my cell phone so I'm basically half blind,

    A looks like a 64
    B looks like a 63

I wonder why no date was posted.

    Have a nice day

Thanks very-very much ! I'm surprised at the great accuracy of your grades. Coin A is rated MS63 but surprisingly Coin B is ranked higher at MS64. Your pricing suggestions are very accurate too - $2k for A and $2.2k for B. The year is 1927 - a common date. I did decide on Coin A as more appealing. Thanks Again !

Well... late to the game, but A coin would have been my choice based only on pictures. Of course, I would not purchase such a coin on pictures alone - especially not just one picture. Cheers, RickO

I recently purchased a coin in a GC auction and when the coin arrived I was disappointed because their was a large streak across the obverse of the coin where the luster was very subdued. I immediately went back to the GC photos, and learned that I had mistaken the subdued luster as light being reflected off the coin. Any suggestions for how I might avoid this? Or is that just the nature of the beast when buying from GC where you only get the one photo?

Contact GC before the auction (telephone or email) and they will review any coin for you and answer any questions you may have.

You can always call them. Ian is great to work with. I have returned a coin to GC. It had a very mushy strike that I didnt notice in pictures. I dont know what their policy is on returns.
    Hope this helps.
