    Acid ate away at the copper.

    We would also need full pictures of obverse and reverse. Looks like compression damage....could also be acid as suggested by @JBK.... However, with just those pictures, I lean more to compression. Cheers, RickO

    Agree. Something acidic etched away the copper core. Not an error of any kind.
