1795 Half Cent with Lettered Edge - From the Norweb Collection

A pleasant 1795 Lettered Edge half cent, with nice surfaces and patina. Two small marks are however present in front of the bust.
I was a bit surprised when I learnt I had won this lot at the auction. In retrospect, I think it was because the preceding lot was of the same variety and in a higher grade and with no defects, so bidder pressure was reduced.
At any rate, it has been one of the better coins in my EAC collection ever since.
Would greatly appreciate your comments.
Thank you!

My first thought was - if you're going to post a lettered edge coin, post a photo of the lettered edge. Not my area of collection, but nice details and surfaces. You got to like 18th century coins. I am a little bothered by the inside of the 9.
I agree with Mark. Both the obverse and reverse have issues with verdigris. If not in a holder I would immediately place them in an olive oil bath for 3-6 months and then use a rose thorn to gently pick at the remainder. JMO

I like it, a lot!
Though since it is still raw, I would be tempted to use acetone soak, rose thorn, etc to remove the minor contamination. But assuming it’s been stable all these years (hard to tell from the old b&w photo), it’s probably fine.
Nice surfaces and excellent color. Super tough to find nice 18th C half cents. I'm in agreement with acetone on the verdigris but like Greg said... if it's been stable all these years, likely not active.

I would be pleased and proud to own that coin. Yes it is not perfect. Neither am I!
And yes, let’s see the edge!
A lotta "meat" on that coin, I like it. Perfect grade for remaining sharpness vs cost= good value.
considerably overweight. struck on thick planchet is what they call these, right?
chapman provenance. a very late 18th century USA copper half cent, very meaty, mostly chocolaty brown, very nice even wear obv/rev, decent strike. nice dentils, tough to ask more of that coin! nice newp.
personally, i'd send to pcgs for authentication and attribution, even if just to crack out and put in an album but only after like others have recommended, the coin has been stabilized and i'd still visit her every month or two until i felt she would be ok to site alone for longer periods. unfortunately the images from that catalog don't show enough detail to know how much, if any, the coin has further corroded. perhaps none, which would bode VERY well.

I thank you all for your comments, and I do apologise if I did not include a picture of the lettered edge.
I guess I'm so much into early copper coinage and the varieties that the fact a 1795 B-1 has a lettered edge is 'second nature' to me. However, I do realise that non-copper collectors may not know that. I will take pictures of the edge (when I get back back home, so please give me some time).
Regarding the verdigris and green spot within the loop of the '9', the coin has been kept in an Intercept Shield holder for many, many years, and the last 4 years in a cloth pouch within a paper envelope (as EAC collectors like to do) and the surfaces do appear stable. However, I have never dipped this coin in acetone and this is still a good idea, so I may yet do that.
Lots of personality with this one. Neat surfaces. Who has owned this coin over the decades?
I'd definitely have pride of ownership if that were mine.
It's a keeper!
.
do you recall the periods from time to time when members here fought tooth and nail to work to tie certain coins to certain catalogs/auctions to find lost provenances?

Love these. That green stuff would bother me to no end. Beautiful coin!

Really nice old copper half cent.... I would be proud to have that one in my collection. Cheers, RickO
I'd soak that in mineral not olive oil as the olive gets rancid over time and leaves a scent.
I think olive oil is OK if you change it for fresh every couple of weeks or so. Wipe the old oil off with a clean old undershirt or the like before putting the coin in the new oil.
Many of the EAC guys use Verdicare ( I think that is the name) on their coppers. Since it is not available in Europe I have never used it and was hoping to obtain some while I am here.
Does anybody have any experience with it, and can tell me where I can obtain some?
Thanks,
