I arranged with the U.S. Mint to pull out the former dies, polish them, and as a favor, just strike one coin for me on a Proof planchet. That’s why it looks like it just came off the press - because it did! (lol) :D

    Thanks.

I've always wondered how on earth coins like that get the 68+ with so many glaring spots on the obverse. I think you got lucky not winning that one IMO.

Having recently made the decision to chase the Mercury proofs myself, I pulled up this thread from last year and read through it again. And it got me to wondering, does this mean your 42 proof is .999 fine rather than the standard .900?

I was joking, due to the coin appearing as if it was made yesterday. I thought my use of the “lol” and wicked laugh emoji indicated that, but apparently not.

    Happy Hunting!

D’oh! I really missed the tone on that. Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding.

This is a Mercury Dime thread that I am unable to fully participate in and that disappoints me. I did bid on one Proof Merc last year but someone bid higher in the closing seconds and I missed out. Maybe one day?

Knowing your taste for colorful Mercs, I'd expect it may be a little bit until the right proof pops up. Proof Mercs with fabulous color cost quite a bit in today's market.

Indeed, any high grade fabulously toned Merc is a pain in the butt to get. Lol

Nice 1939 you have there. I have thought about doing Proofs with ZERO toning as they tend to be a bit more economical. I have so many possible distractions to my primary set of toned Mercs that it is tough to fight them off sometimes.

Thanks! I like my proofs with contrast.

I'd hold out for a nicely toned proof. Something like the OP coin would be a fantastic addition to your already fabulous set of Mercs. If I see something nice, I'll let you know.

@FlyingAl That 39 is gorgeous. Don't remember if I already congratulated you on picking it up, but if not, I meant to. I'm really hoping you get the Cam designation on it.

And since I resurrected this thread to ask a dumb question, I suppose the only decent thing to do is post a pic myself. Just this week I got my second Mercury proof--a 1937 PR65 CAC in an OGH. (I apologize for my terrible photography. At some point I'll have to send it in for the Trueview treatment).

Here's my favorite Proof I own:

The contrasts look stronger in the current set of photos than I recall from your recent thread. Excellent photography and beautiful Dime!

    @cameonut2011

Ironically, they're the exact same photos!

Personally, I think the obverse contrast is stronger in hand while the reverse is a tad weaker, but I'm a bit biased. There is another member here who has seen it in hand, so if he wants to chime in and give his opinion he's welcome to. However, given the circumstances of how he saw it in hand I'll leave it up to him.

I lucked into 3 original proof sets that were set aside back in the 40's and untouched until they were bought by a dealer and sent to PCGS around 2018. They're amazing....so fresh and un-hairlined.

Photos please! I’ve seen one raw 1940 set, and it was incredible. Grades were 67+ through 65RB in my opinion.

Edit: old photos of that set:

@keyman64 This one in PR68 sold for $2937.50 at Legend Auction 58:

I think the price was low considering the excellent toning. Wish I had bid on it......but then the price may have exceeded $4,000? I was hoping someone would post it on this thread as NEWP.
