Attempt to build the Buffalo herd🐬

I am desperately long for a Buffalo bug bite!

I do value your take though …… on what and how best to start.

🥰 In my best judgement ….. decided to first start with the odd pieces (semi and Variety)…. follow by common dates.

I will acquire pieces good enough in my eyes and within my mean then upgrade them over time.

🤔 Do you think this is a wise approach?

Only 2 so far and the one with TV is the prettiest one IMHO

*updated to correct my grammar as usual 😆

First & last..... that's a great start for your herd. ;)

Curious, instead of buying and then upgrading why not buy “right” the first time around. Upgrading for the most part only benefits dealers and auction houses.

If you wish to have a beautiful collection, be in contact with the dealer's that have them. Look at Angel Dee's inventory and if you have time check out his world famous complete toned collection viewable on his web site. Joe (crazyhounddog) can offer advice as can others on the forum. Get ready for one of the most beautiful coins to collect in all of American coinage. My opinion. Now you go girl.

You already have both types, and the 1938-D is affordable in high grade.
    Could already be done!
But of course you may find others you like.

I hear you loud and clear! A buffalo herd is a great goal. I have often thought about them, and hope to change my worn icon here someday although I've become attached to it's character. One question, raw or slabbed? Having them all the same or a hodgepodge of different labels? Ooops, that's two questions.
Waiting to see @crazyhounddog 's amazing buffalo's, I've seen one of Joe's before somewhere here and remember thinking, "Wow, what an incredible buffalo!!!" And @BuffaloIronTail too....in fact, I bet we'll see some standout nickels here!!!!! I like the first one you posted at the top, the last of it's kind, the 38 D. :)

I started my collection with the short set (34-38), then I worked on the date set, which I recently completed. Now I am working on the whole thing and am down to those tougher/expensive branch mint nickels in the middle of the set from '17-27. I have picked up some nice pieces along the way when they came available. I have not made up my mind if I am going to include the 16/16, the 18/17D or the 3-legger yet but the rest of the smaller varieties I am skipping. I posted my set below.

@Paradisefound .... Buffalo nickels are great coins and make a nice set. You have a really nice start and I am sure you will have fun acquiring more. Good luck and show us as you get them. Cheers, RickO

Nice coins! This will be the beginning of an addiction ;)
I really enjoyed building my date set. There's a few that I would upgrade but I always keep an eye out for other ones too.

@erwindoc …… I really like the idea of doing it in segments! Easier to remember and of course if I come across opportunities I would jump on it. Thank you for your advice! 🥰

    Your starters are lovely!
It’s really a great series in many respects.
I now have built up a complete Dansco set-minus the double and overdate. I built up the set first by digging through some rolls I had going back Many years. Over time, I upgraded the more worn ones with better examples. My goal is for at least XF on all and I think I’ve gotten there. It’s not a matched set but it’s been fun building it up over the years with upgrades. Maybe not the most cost effective approach but it was within my budget at the time and workable. So, I have the Dansco and a group of the higher graded issues outside the album in slabs. It works for me.
Collect what you like, even if it’s not shooting for a complete set. Even just a handful of really nice examples from the series might work for you? Only you can answer that question.
    Good luck!

@nwcoast I see @ChrisH821 completed date set and I may stick with the date hunt first and try to only acquire at least MS65

The next coin you should get is the 1913-P Type 1

There are oodles and oodles to pick from, and high grade pieces too.

I'd get the Type 1 in a PCGS slab graded no less than MS-65.

    OK?

You know I quite agree with 1874. I only have a couple of Buffs which include some earlier "S" mints in 63 and 64, but my favorite is a 1915 D with character and only about EF (unslabbed) but with lovely tone. IMHO, "top pop" or near coins are not at all necessary to enjoy the series and even completion is not necessary - just enjoy these wonderful coins with great subjects and artistry that seem to be lacking in more modern series....

Oh my goodness gracious! I could easily quarter complete the set by their offerings.

    Thank you for the suggestion!
I will post them their pix upon arrival ☺️

Those early Buffs are tough to find with full dates and even half a horn. And the guide prices reflect that fact. Full date, half a horn is the starting point for me. Nothing to sneer at with early Buffalo Nickels that meet this criteria. Who doesn't like an EF or better early Buffalo nickel? But they do get expensive.

Does it mean the label values more than the coin now? 😆

I agree. Have you thought of getting a few proofs? As with most matte proofs, in my opinion, the early buffalo matte proofs are absolutely beautiful. Here's a nice picture from another part of the internet:

If not, mint state buffalos are often just as good. I've only got one, but it's one of my favorite coins! I'll try to take a picture of it. Buffalo nickels are a series I really like. I still haven't decided on my true favorite, though ...

Yes! @Paradisefound this is a great idea, it would also add some history to your set. The matte proofs are a great piece of how the mint had to adjust with the dies being produced with the new (and improved?) designs if 1909-1913. If you decide to pick up a proof, I'd highly recommend doing some research into this topic!

  • I am wrestling with the same question for wheat cents right now. It can be difficult to decide. What I have found is there are as many opinions as people for how to do it. However, each is valuable in its own right and a combination of several can help formulate your goals.

I think about how difficult would it be to sell or trade up on specific coins. Key dates shouldn't be too hard, but more common dates it might be better to go big as the resell/trade could be more challenging later.
