1964 D Washington RPM Question

CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 8,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

Is this the FS-502 rpm? There are no signs of machine doubling anywhere else on the reverse. And there is a little squiggly line in the middle of the MM just not visible from the scope. Furthermore, Variety Vista does not list this one.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, it is not RPM FS-502 but just strike doubling. The first impression is NE of the correct position of the mint mark. I have this coin attributed by NGC and I have enclosed a couple of photos for your viewing pleasure.

i took a general look at CF and VV but i'll need any images of gouges/die polishing etc for secondary pups as i did see some on some of the RPMs that could be useful.

generally this type of look on a MM would be something i'd pass on since there are no split serifs (not that they are always there on RPM/OMM) but i've seen plenty a dealer list stuff like this as RPM with no hesitation.

you can feel free to not post any more images til some others chime in, if they do, with useful info or a direct answer. i'll keep an eye on the thread for images/updates.

It does look like an RPM, but will await the further images before conclusion. Cheers, RickO

@mtinis Thank you very much for the clarification. Yea, I was way off as I now see the misplaced D. When I get a chance I will go back to confirm what I was missing in Coinfacts. And will now be able to check my others.

I saw where one of these sold for over 3k in an auction back in 2015.

You're Welcome and keep on looking for 1964 D/D RPMs as they can be worth lots of money. Here is a example of the 1964 D/D FS-501 that sold for $10,000 on April 26, 2022 and it was on eBay for only a day. The other biggie is the 1964 D/D FS-501 Jefferson Nickel the last sale on November 11, 2021 sold for $9,000. Of course these were top of the grade so keep that in mind when looking. Only the top grades draw the big money.

The one that you have is not an RPM, it is purely machine doubling.

@mtinis I noticed that eBay listing was for the 501 prompting me to check NGC for details like the 502 you posted. They have done a knock up job over there, I never realized what a great resource.
