When I lived in Germany the buzz among fantasizing treasure hunters was "Hitler's Gold" that was supposedly stashed somewhere late in WWII.
They dud find caves and mines where artworks were stored, but those were largely not so secret.
In North America we have Oak Island and also the Pennsylvania Civil War gold to dream about.

Oh, it's much older than that. I grew up hearing about this 'Oak Island' of Pennsylvania. Only a couple miles from my home to Dent's Run.
