Hobby fun with Registry Sets

As I have coins graded and/or as I acquire new slabbed coins it is a treat to see some of my Registry Sets (I started some sets about a year ago) move up in the set rankings.

Today my 1968, 1969 and 1970 Proof Sets moved up a little bit (due to Modcrewman selling me some of his coins).

I encourage everyone to join the Registry set group!
However is not like it was years ago where everyone wanted to help each other!

As an example if you ever talk to a Merateer in 2001 you would see the different!!!!!

Funny, I just talked to a member here about his set, he's 1 ahead of me in the registry. Just reached out to say hello and told him I look forward to the chase. It's all good and he seems to be one of the good guys here.

At some point you have to recognize that the other people in your registry are some of the people you have the most overlapping collecting interests with. And those people would probably make the best coin friends.

I think we always see both sides of the equation. I’m working on a “special” Indian Head Cent set, and another collector on the Registry for that same set has done some great things for me:

1. He pointed out to me that Heritage was having a single owner auction of IHC’s. Since it was not a well publicized major auction, this was very kind of him. As a result, I was the high bidder on five high grade IHC’s - two filled holes at a high grade, and the other three are now permanent upgrades to my set.
2. Separately, this same collector pointed out to me that a Top 10 Registry collector had just “Retired” his set. I then contacted that collector, and before he turned over most of his coins to a specialist dealer, we agreed on pricing on seven of his high grade coins that I needed - two filled holes, and five were important upgrades.
3. Maybe this is selfish, but as I get upgrades on coins in many of my sets, I often let others in those same Registry sets that are slightly ahead of me, and slightly behind me, know of my dupes that can help them with their sets. Naturally, only those collectors that allow messaging are contacted.
4. About two years ago or so, I established a wonderful friendship with another collector also putting together a Lincoln Wheat Date Set, and we were neck and neck with each other in the rankings of that set. Since then we have helped each other tremendously in so many ways. We’ve even taught each other so many insights into our wonderful hobby. For reasons we think are smart, we each only place GC bids at the very end of an auction. One time I was knowingly going to be tied up when a coin I needed was up for auction. I let my friend know that in advance, and he was kind enough to bid for that four figure coin on my behalf, using his account. I let him know my aggressive max bid that I wanted him to place. He had absolutely no worries that I’d potentially renege and stick him with that coin he didn’t need.

I think the registry is a great way to keep track of your sets and be organized. I really like the digital albums. For me the whole 'ranking' and competition isn't really that important, but it can be fun sometimes to watch your sets improve in rank as you complete or upgrade them. Now if people would only be willing to sell me the coins i need for my sets....

I have enjoyed participating in the registry and come into contact with some great individuals over the years. It is satisfying to see progress in the sets and when rank increases.
