2022 National

I hope I didn't miss a thread on this topic already. But anyone planning on going to National this year. Any thoughts on prices given the current economic climate. I haven't been to one in a while and was curious if there is a standard "meet up" or dinner for board members. Thanks all.

Would like to go, but not in the "cards". :(
Safe travels to those who do.

Never been crazy for A.C.. The area is suspect ~ hotels expensive with the economy and travel via car or plane is nutty expensive.... I would be more bullish about better deals on card transactions 6 months to a year from now~ I think the consumer is still in the initial stages of deterioration ~ At some point we will see many coveted cards on ebay en masse for sale all at the same time.... thats when deals will arrive IMO....... I am referring to straight auctions not BIN's. I am eager to hear how this year's National goes however from others on Youtube etc....

  • Like Cleveland is better? Or Rosemont?
At least there is something to do nearby and the neighborhood isn’t that bad, like Chicago is safe?

  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭✭✭

AC is fine. If it was that bad you would not have 10,000+ people there for the National. Not the easiest place to get to, but every place will be a plane ride and drive. Looking forward to it.

  • As long as you stay on boardwalk or casinos relative safe
    All cities have crime

I got a card from Bally’s two months ago and Hard Rock in AC. I spent a couple hundred bucks and got a bunch of comps and freebies sent my way. You get offers as a new member.

Called last week to reserve my comps for 7/29-8/3
Fri, Sat, Sun free at Bally’s
Mon, Tue free at Hard Rock
You pay fees and taxes which come to $150 total for the 5 night stay

  • TiborTibor Posts: 3,197 ✭✭✭✭✭

@TsavoriteSam Never been to Cleveland or Atlantic City. Been to Rosemont a couple dozen
times in the last 30+ years. Rosemont is a relatively safe area. The crime you hear about is
on the Southside of Chicago, near where the White Sox play. About 25 miles away. If you fly
into Chicago you are a 10 minute cab ride from the O'Hare. Lots of nice moderately priced
hotels. Good eating options. If you want food delivered, that's an option as well. By the way,
I live 650 miles from Chicago.

Time to bring it back to the west coast.

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,064 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not going to AC. I went to Chicago last year as my sister-in-law lives there. So the Mrs and I made a vacation out of it. Aside from socializing with fellow collectors I know, the show was a bust. Everything was overpriced or not what I was looking for which is mainstream (post-war Topps PSA 8+ or high grade raw). I spent like $150 the entire show.

  • If you see Michael Rakosi at the National, give us a hell yeah.

I was trying to recall what happened during the last down turns, the most serious being the great recession of 2008-2010. I know prices declined a bit, but was is ever a flood of sales? Prices are starting to drop, nothing major yet.

I wonder what PSA will charge for same day or 24 hr turnaround? $100 a card?

My office is in Rosemont, it’s not the Garfield section but don’t kid yourself it’s not that safe at night.

They should hold this in columbus, Ohio not Cleveland.

Rosemont is a fine area with several very good restaurants within walking distance.

I hope to be at the National in 2023 once again when it returns to the Stephens Center. Great location.

I've been to one National and I thought it was way overpriced. Lots of ungraded Mantles for more than the graded ones. I am going to Chantilly next week and that show is very nice. about 75 or so dealers. Nice mixture of items. Prices are fair.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

I went to the AC one a while back and it was definitely the worst for me by a longshot. There was no parking in the place where the event was being held so you had to search the neighborhood and pay like $20 to park in some medical center a mile down the road. Checked the hotels and I think all a mile or two miles away for 200 300 a night. So probably skip this one. I liked the last Cleveland one. Wasn't in the heart of Cleveland. Stayed in a nice hotel outside of Cleveland which was cool and you pull up to the location of the show and park right out front. Chicago I stayed in a hotel and it was a very short walk. Will be going to Chantilly as well. Would like to get Flutie to sign a Generals helmet. Maybe even Annandale, VA Fire Dept. Show Sunday even though that has been very hit or miss. But enough of a hit sometimes to check in.

  • I love the logistics at the Cleveland National. You pull right into a parking lot right in front of the show entrance. Oh hell yeah !!!

Wish they’d come back to Atlanta. We had two during the 90’s. My first National was in Atlanta in the early 90’s and Mantle was part of the autograph corps ($75).

You would think it's mid 50's MLB where no teams were more West then St. Louis. The National needs to come out West.

I’m headed there for sure, but live in NJ so that makes it easier.

My friends and I have been discussing whether better deals are had early (thurs / Fri) vs last day of snow? We are more focused on unopened and not of the super premium variety.

I think that there could be some dealers looking to cut bait (and weight) last day.

    Thoughts?

  • Everything will be overpriced. The dealers are spending a hell of a lot of money on table fees, travel, hotel, food, etc,... No way they sell anything cheap.

Not always true. There are deals to be found at times, too.

  • I’ve gone to several and to be honest, I don’t think I bought much if anything. I agree it will be very expensive. I’ll go shoot craps afterwards.

I cleaned house and emptied my wallet in 2016 and did very, very well for my target list. Which, of course, was 80s unopened.

Deals were definitely there if you put in the work.

I think the higher end unopened is best found at the beginning, at least if you are looking for a deal. I think the cheaper stuff (like 88 Topps rack cases, etc.) is ditched on the last day or so of the show, as people don't want to haul it back. I think the pool of people who can buy the bulky stuff is also limited to the people who didn't fly to the show.
    Just my two cents.

I have gone twice with 5 figures to spend. I think if you go in looking for bargains on anything that is tough to find them but if you go in focused on 10-15 particular cards or boxes then you can drill down and find those at prices you are comfortable with. I had an incredible time on both trips with a list of sales/comp ranges on cards and picked up probably 80% each trip in those ranges. Now if your looking for high end boxes or cards as said before you must find those early since they may go on the first day. Yes bulky/lower end bulk deals can be made on the last day or so I have heard!

Oh hell yeah !!! That's great that you were able to spend 5 figures at two different Nationals. Most people take between $3,000 and $8,000. You did well. Again hell yeah !!!

I've been to 2 Nationals. The best thing was seeing stuff you never see all under one roof. Prices are not great, but there are things to get.

Dallas would be centrally located, direct flights for 90% of the country, and plenty of hotels and flights. If they were smart they would do a spring training National in Orlando in late Feb/early March where you could get tons of current MLB guys in spring training to sign plus stuff for wives and kids at theme parks while the husbands/boys go to the show.

Just about a week away, so who's going? I'll be there all day Thursday and Friday. Hope to see some of you guys there, and of course the usual suspects hanging out at the BBCE booth.

    Plan on going Thursday- Friday

Going Friday and Saturday. Dallas is such a logical location, but the dealers decide. Simple geography, most are located in the upper midwest and northeast so we have Chicago, Atlantic City, and etc.

I’m planning to be there Friday and Saturday. First national since the late 90’s, so I really have no clue what to expect or where to go.

I'll probably have to limit it to 3-4 people so I can give it my all. Please PM me so we can exchange numbers.

Do the dealers stay through the day on Sunday?
Due to time constraints I was thinking going down from CT for Saturday and Sunday.
The two sons going (18 and 15) are primarily basketball oriented - Sixers and Embiid, specifically. They're more budget oriented but the older one is worried stuff will be gone by Sunday. I'm thinking if the dealers are required to not pack up early that there may be deals (relatively) to be had on Sunday.
Also, the website seems to indicate that on Sunday, Bernie Parent is free, although he appears to be a paid autograph on Saturday. Having grown up in the Philly area during the Cup years, I am a huge Parent fan. Despite the fact that I pretty much have everything I would want already signed, my boys want to see me with him. I am sure I could find an item or two, but would like clarification if he is "free" on Sunday.

Mike - Jr and I are flying in Thursday pm and will be there Fri and Sat - maybe a little on Sunday. Will catch you at the usual spot - BBCE or Kurt’s booth.

Kujo - what booth are you going to be at and will stop by. Especially if you have a 75 rack with Aaron or Ryan showing on top 😉

Is there a lunch planned or a meet-up for those that are going.
