I'm also nominating Bob Woodward and Mark Price as US coin and currency folk heroes with their one liner.
Follow the money.
It's not perfect but if there are good records with minimal spin it would be the financial records. Especially to the government or crown. Skim the crown and you go down.
That's what you folks have. The History Channel Pawn Stars on steroids. You trade and collect coins. Turns out that means you are by default historians and dealers in facts and fractions of facts.
