I have a 2015 D dime that is the color of a new penny. I'm not sure on how to add pictures here

"So I take it if it's plated it should weigh more than a regular dime"

    Welcome to the forum! :)

It could be an error or someone may have plated it.
    Can you weigh it?
Can you post photos or a link to your photos on a hosting site?

  • I unfortunately don't have a scale sensitive enough. I'm going to create a imgur link since I can't post here yet

What does the edge look like and try to get a photo of it while you are at it.

Kinda looks like it's been plated, your next step would be to find a way to weigh it.
In your edge view photo you can see discoloration between the letters of Liberty..... it didn't leave the mint that way.

  • That discoloration is in the hair and a little on the back. Is there a reason somebody would go through the trouble of plating it?

Just for fun or a science class. ;)

  • Makes sense lol. So I take it if it's plated it should weigh more than a regular dime or is there something specific I'm looking for?

  • I try lol. I have a few other coins I came across recently that got me started on this lil journey.

  • I appreciate all the help. Much more than the guy who posted close to the same kind of dime, talking about faces in it and aliens..... fun times

Plating can be very thin. The thickness of copper plating on a Lincoln cent is only 8 microns (0.0003"), so you would need a high resolution scale and even then, the weight will likely fall within the mint tolerance, so you can't make a conclusion.

Weight is important however, since cent planchets Weigh more than dime planchets. If your coin is within the dime weight tolerance (2.268 gms +/- 0.091) then its plated

If plated it DOES NOT NECESSARILY weigh measurably more. The plating could be a few atoms thick.

It doesn't look plated to me nor does it look the color of a shiny penny. It just looks discolored from the environment. It would help to have better photos.
