So I finally took the plunge & became a coin collector (old fashioned roll hunting kind)! *UPDATE*

Well folks, last Sunday after pondering the idea for many years I finally took the plunge and became a coin collector! Inspired by the classic Dennis the Menace episode (where Dennis starts a penny folder/album) I got the folders/albums (the nicer Dansco albums were like 10x the cost so I just went with the old fashioned folders) from the local coin dealer and thankfully my wonderful grandma had a HUGE container of pennies and I was able to get all the 70s/80s/90s/00s decades and the majority of the 60s and even a few wheaties (the Coins of Champions!)!

Getting to sort through all those pennies and put them in the album/folder (it's kinda like putting a stamp/sticker in an album!) at my grandma's on her kitchen table is sure to make a happy memory with her...and considering she'll be the big 9-0 in a few months who knows how much more time there is to make these kind of memories with her?

As for the other denominations...she had close to $100 worth of quarters and you guys know there's all those State/National Park quarters to check off! She only had about a couple rolls each of nickels and dimes (I did buy a few more) though.

But the BEST news of all...I can actually get HALF DOLLAR rolls at my local credit/union bank for face value! My grandma sometimes gave me a few half dollars growing up (she even has a few silver 1964s!) and I definitely like big coins best. I am super impressed they even bother having half dollar rolls to be honest.

Now, I would like at some point down the road get as big a sequence of nice looking mint and proof sets as I can. Who is the best dealer/place to do that? And if I wanted to do roll hunting for Wheaties where's the best place for that? Could I get say, a "decade roll" of 1950s or 1940s or 1930s for example?

And here is the Dennis the Menace episode in question...though now there's sixty more years worth of coins to find! Adjusting for inflation, Dennis doing penny rolls/folders in 1961 is about the same as doing dime rolls/folders today.

You can get most anything you want on eBay. Many advertisers will list rolls of wheat cents. I don't know whether or not they are broken down by decades but often times, they claim they are unsearched. I find it hard to believe that a roll of wheat cents would have been around for 60+ years without someone having gone through it. but I suppose anything is possible.

You can also buy other quantities as well from various dealers on eBay. Sometimes they will sell multiple rolls or bags. As to proof sets, or other similar items, these also are available on eBay from multiple dealers. if you are looking for current year proof sets or mint sets, you can obtain these directly from the US mint over the Internet. Be sure to check with several dealers/retailers and also, be sure to check their feedback on eBay as well.

You might also check the Internet to see if there are any coin clubs close to you. These also can be a good source of coins. Sometimes they have dealers with tables, sometimes they have auctions.

Coin shops might also be a good source if there are any close to you.

Good luck. I think you'll find the hobby quite enjoyable.

I know I can get most anything i want on Ebay but I'm sure there's many coin dealers out there to choose from and especially when I'm ready to get a sequence of mint and proof sets I want to be sure I get the best. And honestly where I'm from, I'm lucky there's even one coin dealer (he's been there since 1964 apparently).

Oh this one restaurant we used to have had the yummiest yeast rolls! It's the kind of place where if you're not careful, you'll end up filling up on the rolls before the actual food arrives!

If only I had the good sense to get a set of American Silver Eagles back in my college days (early 2000s)...because this is not not NOT the time to buy anything silver now!! Here we go, THIS is what I can dream!

I wanted to suggest visiting the local coin shop and looking through their inventory.

If they are not too busy you could introduce yourself and see if they are willing to help you learn a bit, building a numismatic relationship as you go. I learn something on every visit to my local shop.

I was at local shops every weekend when the collecting bug first got me. I learned a lot from a few excellent dealers and still visit the best and last local shop.

Prices are typically a bit higher than one might find on ebay but not always. The chance to get in person explanations on coins, their characteristics, learning to see cleaned and altered surfaces, observing other transactions with other customers (this is important to me, seeing how a shop deals with customers selling things and if they are fair or take advantage)
Lots can be learned if you have time to hang around and observe while also looking at coins.

Is it just me or are 2009-2011 quarters really hard to find? I was a cashier at a local Kroger from 2004-10 and I think I did make a post back then questioning how come I didn't see hardly any 2009 territorial quarters. So far I've only found three.

Hey how's this for a lucky find? A few days ago I really lucked out and one of my local bank branches had 19 IKE dollars!! I don't think I ever owned any of those before...didn't get very many different ones (76, 74, 72; don't remember off the top of my head which mint marks) but it was still a neat lucky find!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP7WaUPACuY

I do live right near a main office of one of the local banks...I wonder if that would be my best bet at finding rolls of half dollars regularly? As my generation would say, I like big coins and I cannot lie!

And I did just recently get all 100 state quarters (the last one was one of the TX ones)! Now if only getting the territorial/national park quarters from 2009-12 was that easy...

    WISHLIST
    Dimes: 54S, 53P, 50P, 49S, 45D+S, 44S, 43D, 41S, 40D+S, 39D+S, 38D+S, 37D+S, 36S, 35D+S, all 16-34's

2009 coins are just hard to find CRH in Dimes, Quarters and nickels. Good Luck.

Not to mention there's 12 different 2009 territorial quarters to find (six times the D & P mint marks). And eight different 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cents.

    WISHLIST

So I finally got around to sorting through the SILVER coins my grandma had (who probably had no clue that it was anything special; she's just the "I only care if it spends" type sadly) and I managed to find (all P's, no D's for some reason):

    Dimes: 64P, 64D, 63D, 62D, 60D, 59D, 58P, 57P, 52D, 50D, 47D, 46D
Plus three spare 64's and a spare 62.
    Quarters: 64P, 62D, 61D, 56P, 46P
    Halves: 64 (x3), 66

Think I should try my local coin store and see if I can at least finish the 60s/late 50s D mark dimes? Sure tiny little silver dimes can't be THAT much...can they? :(

Now isn't getting these silver coins a lot better than say, generic ol' silverware?

    WISHLIST
    Dimes: 54S, 53P, 50P, 49S, 45D+S, 44S, 43D, 41S, 40D+S, 39D+S, 38D+S, 37D+S, 36S, 35D+S, all 16-34's

shrugs I dunno...they were in decent shape, I guess? I was just thrilled to get this many at all and that my grandma thought to save these. I called the local coin shop and they said silver dimes are AT LEAST two bucks each. So even tiny little dimes have at least that much worth of silver apparently.

This is how I'm feeling because out of the dozens of nickel/dime rolls I've searched through so far I cannot find ONE 2009 of either mint mark!!!

At least I have found seven of the 2009 territorial quarters so far...so there's that. And one weird one I only just now found was a 2018-D nickel...is that one supposed to be really tough to find for some reason?

    WISHLIST
    Dimes: 54S, 53P, 50P, 49S, 45D+S, 44S, 43D, 41S, 40D+S, 39D+S, 38D+S, 37D+S, 36S, 35D+S, all 16-34's

You can find silver value many places. Kitco.com has web site with price of silver, gold etc. Google value of silver coins. Many web sites will give the silver value for common coins. Right now it is about 14 times (a silver dime has about $1.40 worth of silver-but this changes daily A dealer will sell common date silver coins for 20 times face value or more They need to make a profit You might find some selling for less than 20 times but doubtful.

Have fun in your journey. That is important.

My local dealer (frankly in a town my size I'm lucky there's even one, third generation, started in 1964) charges 22x face value for "junk/constitutional silver"...but at least this way I can pick the ones from the box I think look the best. BTW I goofed and didn't realize the mint mark on the silver dimes/quarters (and older nickels!) is on the back! So here are the silver dimes I really have:

    Dimes: 64P, 64D, 63D, 62D, 60D, 59D, 58P, 57P, 52D, 50D, 47D, 46D
Plus three spare 64's and a spare 62.
    Quarters: 64P, 62D, 61D, 56P, 46P

This is a pretty good start for silver FDR dimes, right?

    WISHLIST
    Dimes: 54S, 53P, 50P, 49S, 45D+S, 44S, 43D, 41S, 40D+S, 39D+S, 38D+S, 37D+S, 36S, 35D+S, all 16-34's

I will make the assumption that a LOT were minted in preparation for the end of silver coinage. Approximately 1,028,622,762 were made for that year.

That's great that you started your first album. I started mine in the early 90s and just recently came back to coin collecting. Enjoy. Find a coin shops that you enjoy going to or speaking with the owner/employees. If your like me, and your local shop is not enjoyable at all to visit, meet other dealers at shows to develop a relationship with over time.

Hey this FAQ is pretty interesting:

    https://www.gainesvillecoins.com/blog/junk-silver-faqs-90-percent-silver-coins

So apparently you need 13.8 silver dimes to make a troy ounce or 5.5 silver quarters. Since my grandma already got me off to a good head start on silver dimes, you guys think at some point I should go to my local dealer (is 22x face value ($2.20 per dime & $5.50 per quarter) okay?) and see if I can say, fill in the remainder of the 60s and work backwards while (I think?) silver is at a reasonable price?

PS: I almost forgot, I actually found a 1940 and 1936 nickel! I can't believe anyone was actually crazy enough to spend a Buffalo nickel (that you can actually see the date on it!) at face value...I always thought even among non-coin collectors they were a big fan favorite. Remember at the beginning of Armageddon when Truman (no not the President) promised one of the shuttle astronauts a Buffalo nickel if he'd calm down just a little bit?

    WISHLIST
    Dimes: 54S, 53P, 50P, 49S, 45D+S, 44S, 43D, 41S, 40D+S, 39D+S, 38D+S, 37D+S, 36S, 35D+S, all 16-34's

Back in the 60's my aunt used to bring home bags of coin rolls from the grocery store where she worked. I would spend hours going thru them to fill in my Whitman Coin Folders. Then I would roll them back up and return them with a payment for the coins I kept. I enjoyed that very much but just do not have the time for that now and my collecting interest have changed greatly since then.

sent you a PM earlier. I started out collecting in blue Whitman folders as a youngster on the living room floor at my grandparents' house, and have never strayed. Great, enjoyable hobby "filling holes" with coins they no longer make & learning the history behind them!

Not too many decades ago, there was a local coin shop run by an old guy, with "junk" boxes to browse thru, lots of 2x2's with various coins to look at, and (best of all) a bookcase full of used blue Whitman folders that spanned common denominations & series as well as obscure & obsolete ones going as far back as the earliest large cents, 20 cent pieces, 2-cents & 3-cents, etc - - you name it. They even had foreign folders, like Canada, UK, Mexico, Australia/NZ, etc! They sold for $1 each, and I used them as springboards for expanding my collection into new areas. I just had to avoid the ones that had musty/moldy smells to them from being stored in damp basements, etc. It was fun to see all the varieties & re-prints of each series, and how Whitman changed some of the series' names over time.

I also had luck (especially with foreign folders) going thru Randy Miller at Chief Coin & Supply (Oshkosh, WI), who offers both new & used versions (with used blue folders only $1 or $1.50 at the time). He has a wide variety of folder/album styles & manufacturers to choose from.

Drop me a PM with a list of your needs in each series, and I'll see if I can be of any help.

    -- Dave :)

If I'm getting the rolls at face value I can't really lose, right?

And in other news, I thought with silver now down to just under $20/oz I'd go down to my local coin shop and see what kind of junk, eh I mean constitutional silver I could find. He had a real good selection a few weeks ago when I was last there but I didn't have a wishlist ready at the time. Well not surprisingly, someone else got the idea to grab cheap-ish silver and there wasn't nearly as much to choose from (no quarters left for starters). Still I did get a few silver dimes for $2 each (not bad right?) plus a few of the 40% silver JFK halves I wasn't originally figuring on, so I guess I didn't leave empty handed. Still I wish I had been prepared with a wishlist a few weeks prior when he had a much better selection though... :(

Wow, has it already been almost three months since I started my journey? Well here is what I'm missing so far with my regular modern/clad (1965-present; the kind you can get at the bank at face value which is the whole idea/point of CRHing); how do you guys think I'm doing so far?

STILL missing both 2009 nickels & 2009-P dime -- All the more reason I'm pleasantly surprised that I've been able to find 11 out of 12 of the 2009 territorial quarters!

Missing Quarters: 2009-P Puerto Rico, 2010-D Mt Hood, 2011-P Gettysburg, 2012-D El Younque, 2012-D Acadia

As I much as I am quite sad/disappointed that halves hardly ever show up at my nearest bank and nearest credit union (they did have SEVEN half dollar rolls when I first started this though!), they did finally have $8 worth and honestly I'm thrilled that I was able to get at least ONE that I was missing! Given the circumstances though I don't think I'm doing all that bad:

    Missing Halves (1964-99): 64D, 78D, 79D, 82D, 84P+D, 87P+D, 88P, 91D, 94D, 95D, 99D

Best finds so far: 1900 Barber quarter (only silver find so far but quite a dandy, no?), three Buffalo nickels (all 1936 for some reason...)

And naturally as you can tell by my signature below, I've really caught the silver fever and I have tried my best to get all the silver I can with (sadly) the very limited SSDI I get...I can only hope silver continues to stay somewhat cheap (>$20oz) because I would love to someday get started on the Ben Franklin halves!

So what do you guys think? Think I've done pretty good CRHing after three months? At the moment I can only do two quarter rolls, one dime roll, and 4-5 nickel rolls at a time.

    Quarters: 52S, 47S, 46S, 40S, 39S, 38S, 37D+S, 36D+S, 35D, 34D, 32D+S

Doing great. The fun is in the hunt and discovery of the find.

Some banks will order half’s (or other) rolls by the box. Just ask the head teller what their policy is.
