I bought this at the TNA Show yesterday in Arlington, TX. I haven't seen very many counterstamped Flying Eagle cents, so I thought it was interesting. I do see J. Putnam listed on richhartzog.com, but don't have the Brunk book. Does anyone have any additional info about it? Thanks as always!

Too many Putnams around to figure it out. I looked on NEWSPAPERS.COM and found way too many.
Pete
I have a couple of the DR. G G WILKINS counterstamps on FE cents.
That's a cool one!
I have a couple stamped FE's, ill dig them out.
No info on Putnam, but I feel like I've seen that stamp before? 🤔
J. Putnam is cataloged as Brunk-786 and is known on FE 1c, large cents and Seated 25c.. It's not scarce, I've handled several over the years including on FE 1c. Counterstamps on FE 1c are not unusual nor are c/s on copper nickel Indian 1c but very few turn out to be from Civil War merchants and only a couple c/s are currently considered & cataloged as actual Civil War tokens.
Nice CS Flying Eagle cent.... I see collectors say that CS FE's are not uncommon.... However, I have seen very few here on the forum over the years, and only recall one at a coin show. Cheers, RickO
*John Day Putnam was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly.
Putnam was born on June 19, 1837 in Brooklyn, Connecticut. He was a direct descendant (second great-grandson) of Israel Putnam. Putnam went on to reside in Troy, St. Croix County, Wisconsin. During the American Civil War, he served with the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army, eventually becoming the regiment's commissary sergeant. In 1874, Putnam moved to River Falls (town), Wisconsin. He died in 1904.
Putnam was a member of the Assembly in 1883. Other positions he held include Chairman (similar to Mayor), Treasurer and Assessor of Troy, Chairman of the town board (similar to city council) of River Falls and Chairman of the county board of Pierce County, Wisconsin. He was a Democrat.*
All info provided by Wikipedia and I'm thinking that's why you have his name on a coin instead of a button or a small trinket,, was like a political trinket in my opinion.
Thanks
Also Putnam is a famous family name
Thanks, everyone! Some really great info here!
