    Outstanding!

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

72 $ is much tougher then it is given credit for. I saw this coin instantly as it posted to eBay. Not quite up to my standards or I would have purchased it. Like @skier07 said…. I like them crustier… The chest hit bugs me more though. Might be less noticeable in hand but I felt it was very reasonably priced all things considered.

  • kazkaz Posts: 9,206 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'd be very happy to have that one in my collection. Nice pickup!

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

A nice XF40 coin.... Big silver tends to get beat up in circulation. The hit on the breast is unfortunate, but looks less noticeable in the slab picture. Cheers, RickO

Yeah, somebody started to give Miss Liberty a Mastectomy. I found it funny the listing was ended almost immediately after I started this thread. I buy coins, not stickers and Plastic....well, I did recently break my rule on a Barber Half...so now I own 2 of the same date, a nice coin that should be wearing the plastic the other is wearing!

Seated $1s were an excellent series, you almost wish they weren't discontinued or that the Morgans were allowed to be issued with Trade $1s concurrently for some more years.

I didnt see this thread until just now...

I bought the coin at 5:53PM yesterday, shortly after it was listed on ebay - purchased direct from pinnacles website.

I emailed them at 8:13PM to let them know it was still active on ebay ;)

The general overall look + price was enough for me to overlook the gouge on the bust, ill report back once in hand.

@RedSeals -Tough date to find decent. At that price there is very little downside even if you end up not liking in hand. Truth be told if you want a choice AU with a sticker it would likely take you years to find the upgrade. Congrats

I found the first 1872 $ very original, but did not like the strike on the upper obverse or the hit on the breast.

Regarding the OP’s coin, I would not have described it as “outstanding” with the chest gash.

I didn't intend for it to be knocking a coin you purchased but a knock on the labeling of the coin. I was surprised when you announced you purchased it. I'm very surprised how much pickier I am than the 20+ likes this coin received. Lottsa plastic and sticker buyers here IMHO. To put it point blank, that coin would never find a place in my collection. It really makes me wonder what a C coin would look like, as to me that coin is at the bottom of desirability for me unless it was polished or had damage that shouldn't pass PCGS standards. Major mark in the main focal area, obviously dipped a few times during it's life, possibly overgraded, and poorly struck to boot. That coin certainly says no coin can truly be traded sight unseen.....plastic, stickers and all.

Again, My apologies for knocking your coin and I do hope you are happy with it.

Are we sure it's a hit? There's nothing reflective to suggest it is. It could possibly be a toning streak. The little thing on the cheek looks similar. Again, the four people who graded it had it in-hand and we don't.

It looks like a nice coin to me.

@amwldcoin - We are all at a disadvantage not being able to see the two coins in hand. But… Don't you think your 72 $ has been dipped? I do.. Don’t know what you paid for yours (aside that it’s more then he paid for his) or what pcgs graded it. But I’d venture to guess it would be easier to sell and get the money back out of @RedSeals cac coin then you would on the non cac (barring some extraordinary deal you may have gotten). I guess I just don’t get the hostility towards cac that you have.

I guess the simple answer is this, If you bought that coin sight unseen and it showed up at your door, would you be happy with it? I wouldn't. Please explain it to me, for the life of me I just can't see that coin as an A or B coin. I started this thread because I was totally shocked when I saw that coin.

I'm sure my 72 has been dipped at some time. But the surfaces aren't dull and has abundant original luster remaining. Other than Morgan Dollars, I'm a firm believer 95-99 percent of Barbers and back have been dipped at sometime....just depends on how much and how hard as to the quality of the coin that is left afterwards.

I'm confident if and when I go to sell my 72 it will be easy for me to make a profit on it, and no I didn't rip it.

The problem with you is you did not honestly state your opinion, at least not initially. It was under the guise of sarcasm which didnt work as an overwhelming amount of particpants in this thread liked the coin, although many admit its flaws.

I agree with your statement and I appreciate your opinions always.
However, between the two coins you posted, I really like the first (CAC coin) on its own merits way better than the second coin. To me, the first coin looks original, or mostly original, and while I don't particularly like the hit, or whatever it is, at the chest, I much prefer the CAC graded coin to your second listing which looks clearly dipped, though admittedly, which has a better strike and better detail. But I'm just a collector, and not a full time dealer. And I think I prefer Crusty's to either of the two mentioned and inspired 's is in another league altogether.
But please keep posting and I'll keep reading.

With SLDs you have to look at the big picture. There is not that many 1872 $ left in existence (very roughly 2000 per coinfacts). Based off of what I’ve seen come available publicly in the last 8 years I’d say only 1, maybe 2 out of 10 actually deserve to be in straight graded plastic. Is the OP’s coin perfect. No. Is your coin perfect No. I don’t like either of the coins enough to buy for my collection. But buying sight unseen like you said before. I’d take a chance with the CAC SLD every single day of the week. Would not dream of doing that with non CAC SLDs.

    I'm glad we weren't competing tonight! o:)

Actually the pictures of my coin are a bit misleading because I took them with my cell phone. It's pretty much a white coin. Perhaps if pushed I'll pull it out and take a more accurate picture. Pictures taken after I picked it up while sitting in the Dentist's office waiting on wifey, and then off to the Safe Deposit Box! When I get far enough along with my set I will take better pictures. There's no question my AU53 72 has been dipped. But! it was done correctly and has as much or more original luster and look as any Morgan Dollar of the same grade.
