Did the Browns make a mistake signing Watson?

He's been hit with another lawsuit by another accuser, the Browns have a mess to deal with, is Watson even going to get to play?

The Browns Didn't Think This Deshaun Watson Thing Through

News just keeps getting worse for the Cleveland Browns on the Deshaun Watson front. On Tuesday we learned a 23rd woman had filed a lawsuit against Watson for inappropriate sexual conduct during a massage session. That just adds to the mess the Browns are dealing with after trading for Watson and handing him an enormous contract.

When the Browns traded three first-round draft picks, a third-rounder in 2023, and fourth-rounders in 2022 and 2024 to the Houston Texans for Watson and a 2024 sixth-rounder, they faced incredible backlash. That only intensified when Cleveland handed him a fully-guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. The Browns wouldn't have done that unless they thought he would be able to play and that his legal troubles were almost behind him. They aren't.

Two weeks ago we learned the lawsuits Watson has been facing for more than a year won't be resolved until at least 2023. Which means the Browns will have to play the entirety of the 2022 season with that hanging over the team's collective head. Everyone will face questions about the lawsuits and the quarterback's conduct, especially Watson, the front office and the team's coaches.

Now another suit has been added to the pile. This time, the plaintiff states that she had her first massage sessions with Watson in 2020 and his "behavior grew worse." During the third and final massage, Watson allegedly exposed himself to her, touched her inappropriately and "repeatedly requested" she have sex with him.

According to the lawsuit, the woman changed her mind about suing Watson after watching HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" last week. On that show, two other women, Ashley Solis and Kyla Hayes, who have also accused Watson of inappropriate sexual conduct, criticized the Browns for giving the quarterback an NFL-record $230 million guaranteed contract after trading for him in March.

The Browns just didn't get it. Watson has serious problems and they imported them, then handed him the largest contract in NFL history. They're stuck with him now regardless of what happens.

The Browns saw a path to landing the franchise quarterback they haven't had for three decades and dove in because they could. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. They're learning that hard lesson right now.

Of course, this whole mess could have easily been avoided if Watson would have just hired a man to massage him, perhaps even Raymond?

  • doubledragondoubledragon Posts: 23,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes, I'm sure Raymond can fit Watson into his schedule.

The more I thought about it, the more I dislike the Browns shunning of Mayfield.

Mayfield might not be the best, but in him the Browns and the fans found something they'd been looking for. He brought hope, and actual success. He played through serious injury, and the organization failed to save him from himself. They did it intentionally, knowing he would fail and diminish his worth.

They gave up a king's ransom for Watson.

Watson has incredible talent, I think that they will get a lot of high level play out of him at some point. If he serves a suspension this year it won’t be the end of the world for them since he is still only 25-26?

He is FAR better than Mayfield will ever be.

I have no problems with Watson trying to pay for sexual services as long as it’s between two CONSENTING ADULTS.

At first I thought these accusations were a money grab but now I am starting to have my doubts since only a few are coming out publicly and really just want him to be found to be liable for wrong doing.

The guy is a great football player but a complete idiot for trying to get these type of services from so many different woman that don’t advertise for it. There are so many other ways to get what you want to pay for but he chose a different route and now he is paying for it.

I wouldn’t have guaranteed this type of money for any player but realistically after this works itself out they could have the missing piece to get them a Super Bowl

Didn't most of these allegations come during the government shutdowns? I assume that the naked ballets were shutdown at this time and Deshaun had to find another avenue to release.

Yes, the Browns have a situation on their hands. I can see it now, he's going to show up at the lockerroom before the game dressed in a silk robe, smelling like exotic massage oil.

  • doubledragondoubledragon Posts: 23,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

It's weird, because Watson really doesn't fit the description of the type of guy into this sort of thing. Now Aaron Rodgers, I can see that, with his mustache and everything.

I’m not sure if it’s a mistake but it sure looks bad for the entire NFL. But hey, the networks sign alleged murderers and dog killers as analysts, what a little massage therapy problem compared

Yes, I still remember when the Texans played the Panthers a while back, Watson didn't play because of injury. I think I still have the injury report around here somewhere, ah yes, here it is.

the Browns have proven time and again that they have no clue when it comes to evaluating quarterbacks. Manziel was an unmitigated disaster. granted, that can and does happen in the draft world. but then to turn around and draft him again? expecting a different result? isn't that the definition of insanity? i don't care if Mayfield was legit hurt, had a boo-boo on his pinky toe or was 1,000% healthy, he is not a championship-caliber quarterback. and in today's pass-happy NFL, that is a prerequisite for reaching the promised land.

you could practically hear the Cleveland brass when they went after Watson. "you know what? f this noise. i don't care what may or may not have happened down in Houston, bc we're about to mortgage the mf farm up in here and get this right once and for all."

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

The grass isn't always greener. I understand Mayfield's shortcomings, but I think the organization has bigger problems than replacing him. I believe they could have kept him and built more around him. I was one of the few people here who felt that what OBJ did with that video his Dad made, and forcing his way out, was wrong. I do think that OBJ is a problem, and I don't see the Rams SB as any vindication for him.

Yes, I also hate the Mayfield commercials. But I feel as though they could have capitalized on the situation and made some good ones. "Honey, we might have to move, I might lose my job". "Honey, they'll keep me, but want me to take less than I want. Should I stay? We might have to downsize". Etc.

I actually don't mind Mayfield. The Browns obviously knew it was an issue with how they structured watson's contract for the first year. I don;t see how he comes back before Bauer and I'm not sure Bauer has a path back

Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards

Agree and disagree with you, Showman. I also think the video was wrong. And I had my doubts about about the Rams bringing in OBJ. I thought the Rams were desperate after the loss of Robert Woods. I was looking for a problem. It didn't happen. He was no problem... in fact, he was a model citizen and a team player all the way. The Rams would not have won the SB without him. He needed a change of environment with an organization that doesn't put up with player nonsense. On or off the field. The Rams run a very tight ship. Much different than ALL the other teams in the league. That's why they won the SB. Look for a repeat.

Trading away all those picks shouldn't matter, browns have shown they can't draft anyways. But yes was a very confusing move to trade so much for a player facing the scrutiny at the time not to mention what's been piled on since. Maybe if he was willing to play for peanuts may have made it more worth the headaches, but that obviously wasn't the case.

It will only be a mistake to the Browns when the 47th woman comes forward.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,009 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think it was a big mistake. they lost TONS of draft capital and gave Watson a fully guaranteed contract. ugh...

I agree with the above comment about Cleveland having no idea how to draft QBs. this goes all the way back to 1999 with tim couch.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Yes, he was integral to their SB win. But honestly I didn't agree with the overwhelming majority that painted the situation as something like he finally found the right spot, somewhere he fit,etc I say that because he has a history of being a distraction. And that video about Mayfield was, in my opinion, over the line.

Apparently he tried to pay each accuser 100k but they all refused because of the non disclosure language.

    That’s pretty damning for Watson

Just a heads up on OBJ: his humility was forced upon him and he will go back to his ‘three year team ruining plan” almost immediately.

I say forced because when two of the worst franchises in the league (Browns and my Giants) get rid of you, messing up in stop 3 could have been a career ender.

Wait until next season when he’s back to being a the third option - he will start chirping.

For the OP’s question, it’s a terrible move for the Browns and an example of what not to do.

Two problem QBs, with both making good money? In an already fractured locker room?

    Yikes…

    Yep - Not looking good...........

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Another lawsuit has been filed against Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson after a 24th woman accused him of sexual misconduct, according to reports from ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.

    @sarahbarshop
Deshaun Watson now faces 24 active civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct during a massage session.

I agree with you 100% Wheatie about OBJ's humility being forced upon him......but....maybe like a brat child who needs a firm hand to teach him a lesson in "humility" he has figured it out and will profit from it.

AND,......I guarantee you this......The second he steps out of line and starts the Prima Donna routine...... He will be an Ex-Ram....immediately. The Ram organization does not put up with that nonsense........ There is a reason they are the champs.......That's A big part of it!......THANK YOU, Colin K., you are the biggest inspiration the Rams ever had!......A God Send!

This entire thing with him smells of “Deviant” behavior.

Now I say that because apparently these girls didn’t advertise themselves as these type of “Massage therapists” that’s why I say deviant behavior. I mean there are so many consenting adult Woman out there that are available for these type of services, so why would he not go that route?

No. However, his contract is structured so that his salary the first year is something like $1m. If he gets suspended for a year, he loses only that amount so he would still get 99% of his guaranteed contract.
