:p

Okay this one is more like a three-quarters cent. I bought it on Ebay listed as dateless for just under $14.

So this one is actually rare. Given the condition of the coin I will spare you guys the attribution contest. It is a 1796, Reverse of 1795 Sheldon-99, which is an R-5 variety (and also my first R-5 large cent). The remaining reverse detail narrows it down to either S-99 or NC-4, and the remaining portion of the date matches that of S-99 (date spaced 1-7-96, 6 not touching bust).

So yeah. I will take all the R-5 Sheldons I can get for $14 each in any grade, and I will also take all the 1796 Draped Bust cents I can get for $14 each in any grade. Getting both at the same time is even cooler. Graysheet on this variety is $400 in AG, and this one is worth… who cares. It’s one of about 50 known. (Some sources call this variety an R-5+, but I believe it is now just R-5.)

Takes a special kind of collector to appreciate something like this… but I like it for what I paid. Let’s see how many of you feel the same way…

"You can't get just one gun." "You can't get just one tattoo." "You can't get just one 1796 Draped Bust Large Cent."

Good job! Can’t go wrong buying three quarters of a 18th century coin for $14.

If you like it, good for you! And for $14, sure, can't go wrong for the price of a sandwich.

But since you asked if we feel the same way...I am not a special type of collector I guess.

very interesting. I guess since you have 3/4 of a 1/2 cent you have a 3/8th cent. Unique. Good job!

You’ve likely easily gotten $14 worth of enjoyment out of the research and attribution you’ve done. Good for you!

It is a 1796 Large Cent. The 1796 Half Cent is very rare, extremely valuable, and was only struck with the Liberty Cap design (the title is a joke). This large cent is of the Draped Bust design.

Curious if one of the 4 main services would slab it with your excellent research.

Good research... and sometimes we take what is available. Good price, and a nice piece for your collection. Cheers, RickO
