Memorial Day originated during the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle.

Actually, it originated after the Civil War to honor those killed in the Civil War.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Cheers, RickO
