I'd say the skinny date as I'm assuming that was how Fraser initially put it out. Once Sinnock took over as chief engraver he made changes to the designs. One noticeable date change is with Mercury Dimes where he closed the loops on the 9, whereas under Morgan the loops on 9 were open loops.
Skinny date for me too.

Skinny date for sure
I like the date used for 1921. The 1 is different than any other year.

LIBERTY looks cleaner and more defined on the skinny date type too.

Ha ha. I wrote “fate” instead of “fat” in the poll. No way to edit it.

The date change in appearance is likely due to master die deterioration over the years. This can be seen with the Lincoln Cent in the mid 60s and the drastic change in the portrait in '69. It happens to all denominations if they aren't retouched.
Coin Photographer.
skinny wins with me

FAT DATE, what's wrong with you people. lol.
The crisp, clear date and liberty look so good in contrast to the sculpted Native American. I like everything about that 1916!

The earlier dates were as sharp as you could get the classic designs. There was a lot of neglect in coin infrastructure in the 1920s and lots of cost saving measures implemented then. Once you got to the 1930s, Sinnock made revisions and master hubs started to be worn out. Look at how the cent uses the same obverse master hub from 1916 through 1968.
I prefer the skinny date format..... Looks more professional. Cheers, RickO
I'm on the side of skinny date, just because it looks better and fits in the design.
ANY date. No preference.
The Mint was never 100% effective at modifying the date against wear.........and they did try a lot.
Look at that 1916. See the bigger 6?
That was only one attempt.
