199something d Jefferson nickel

Ladies and gentlemen, I tried to find out what happened to this coin but I couldn't cuz I don't know the last number in the date. I can make out 199....and that's it. If I had to guess...die attrition error. Why did I guess that, pictures. That's all I got i've never seen something like this not that I've been at it 20 years and I don't want to take a day to try to figure it out. With my luck it's probably environmental. But to me that is a wow factor going through my nickels I've seen with the naked eye little help please

It looks like a "dryer coin" or something similar. Repeated rotation against a hard object on the one side ground down the raised rim until it covered the top edge of the letters.

No reason to give up. Just learn about the minting process. There is no way that effect could be produced at the mint. Once you learn the minting process you'll realize that.

Learning how to spot post-mint damage is important. Reading the many threads on this forum that feature damaged coins will help you a great deal.

This isn't meant to be cruel, but if you truly are as troubled by this hobby as you state you are then I would highly recommend you leave and find something better for yourself.

You don't have to deal with errors or varieties. To can simply collect a coin series or collect coins by type.
