I'm not sure you can conclude anything from 2 coins. The plain label might have sold for $2k+ last night.

Some collectors are definitely paying for labels - compare prices realized on some recent issues for first strike vs. first day of issue vs. advanced release vs. various signed labels.

Some buy labels, some buy coins, some buy the holder. Life wouldn't be at all interesting if everyone liked the same things.

Odd... why did PCGS use two different grades?

With “fdoi “ regularly getting 25-30% more? I would say yes.
Now fdoi is a little different from FS / ER in that they retain their premium during selling, while FS/ER not so much. There’s exceptions to everything. 😉🦫🙀

Odd... why did PCGS use two different grades?

Some 1965 to 1967 sms coins were graded MS instead of SP.

Also the case with Satin Finish coins of 2005 to 2010. Here is a kennedy graded ms69 on the holder but called sp69 in the set registry.

One is a bullion coin with no numismatic value and shouldn’t have been slabbed (imo) and the other is a SP with “some” numismatic value.
Both are not worth much more than spot imo.

Despite the MS on the second label, both coins are burnished.

    I'm learning something new everyday!

The PCGS First Strike program designates coins issued in the first 30* days of the Mint's release.

    Total minted 2,481
    Total PCGS 563
    PCGS "70" 335
    PCGS First Strike "70" 40

Could all 2,481 coins have been struck within the first 30 days?

It's not really when they are struck. It's when they are shipped. It is sort of a meaningless designation. HOWEVER, there are people who like their set to match and so want the 1st strike holder. As you can see from the numbers, it is harder to find the 1st strike for whatever reason.

Labels convey certain details the TPG deems relevant. And yes, some collectors do collect labels. I do not, but let those who like coins with this type of information also enjoy that nice of collecting. Some people collect thimbles or spoons... Whatever makes lives interesting.... Cheers, RickO

Odd that the “First Strike” coin has a higher, more recent serial number. I guess there is no expiration on “First Strike” as long as it is in the sealed, postmarked box.

Many dealers and vest pockets will look to buy coins graded MS or PR70 at slight premiums then run them online for full market value.

Speaking of burnishing, the PCGS isn't exactly burnishing its reputation with antics like this.

Sometimes we buy both. The coin is first for me. The label(s) are secondary, but also have some importance.

Spending $650 for a nicer label could be considered the equivalent of spending $650 for a nicer grade.

  • 1madman1madman Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭✭✭

Can’t get any better than this coin as it’s already graded 70. This is an extremely tough coin to get in first strike, believe me.

  • HTubbsHTubbs Posts: 4,138 ✭✭✭

Collect what you like... For many people that First Strike premium, especially on 2000-2010 era Moderns is well worth it to enhance their registry sets.

The label is indicating a certain time period in which it was shipped from the Mint. 200 years ago, this would have been something very interesting, to know when certain coins were shipped from the Mint.

For me, that's the opposite, I'd pay more for the standard label. I like a normal looking slab.

  • ashelandasheland Posts: 23,190 ✭✭✭✭✭

I made a special request to have this normal:

Many collectors collect plastic and stickers (if applicable) with the coin only being of secondary or tertiary importance. The number seems to have grown immensely since the early 2000s and is probably driven in part by the registry craze. (Aren’t first strikes weighted differently? Even if not the registries certainly created a label and plastic obsession that arguably bled over to special labels.) I do not think it is healthy for the market.

Speaking of special labels, TV peddler Mike Mezack is now offering HIS signature on NGC slabbed 2021 burnished American Silver Eagles. Saw it on his Saturday morning infomercial on the History channel.

Not a fluke. Two sold in last nights GC. All three are Burnished. $4,200 for the label!

    Winning Bid $7,861

    Winning Bid $7,800

    Compared to:

    Winning Bid $3,600 - March 6, 2022

  • 1madman1madman Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭✭✭

Again, this is a VERY rare coin in a first strike label. Honestly I think the 2 coins went somewhat cheap tonight as these do not surface very often. Think I’ve seen less than 8 total available ever.

  • Jzyskowski1Jzyskowski1 Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes. First day of issue only. ( if value and future potential is important)
Not I will not pay extra for… FS. ER… All the same as plain label. ( advanced release is beyond comprehension for me, why the heck is having something that was released a week earlier than the commoner can have them and at 3x the price!😂😂 so ego stroking, important? )
    Again I rant. Sorry 😉🙀🦫

I did bid on those 2008-w one ounce FS. However I was blown out early on as I will pay a premium on some of these-just not that large of a premium!
