1851 $2.5 gold liberty head, Jewerly

PppPpp Posts: 517 ✭✭✭✭

I been offered an 1851 $2.5 gold liberty head coin (sorry for the fuzzy picture). The coin was in jewerly and probably polished so I view it as detail grade (I would not send it in).

Melt is about $230- and locally dealers sell an au version of this coin for about $600-.

I am considering getting it because it’s over 150 years old and it’s gold, but I am not going to pay straight grade money for it.

I understand some people wouldn’t consider this coin under any circumstances, however for individuals that normally buy gold coins in this condition what would you consider to be fair?

Thank you in advance for your comments.

Skier07: thank you very much, that helps tremendously. I use to get the daily sheet from upstate but they changed their site so I don’t get it anymore. ☹️

If you are getting it for an album, or just your personal enjoyment, then I would say $300 to $350 would be a fair price. Cheers, RickO
