I just (re)completed my Carson City $5 set. My original set was completed many years ago, then broken up and sold. I started this set with two coins, and 1870 and 1873, both in P45 CAC.

My original set is here: https://pcgs.com/setregistry/gold/branch-mint-gold/carson-city-gold-5-basic-set-circulation-strikes-1870-1893/alltimeset/106427

My current set is here: https://pcgs.com/setregistry/gold/branch-mint-gold/carson-city-gold-5-basic-set-circulation-strikes-1870-1893/publishedset/215029

Here are some of the details:

  • My goal is to build the set in P45 CAC
  • Of the 19 coins in my set, 13 are CAC, 13 are in P45, and 8 are in P45 CAC

Here are my highlights and observations on the dates:

1870 - I recently picked up the Fairmont P45+ CAC coin. It is an amazing coin that really anchors the set. It's interesting that a few 1870 CC $5's have popper up for sale recently. I was able to upgrade a prior P45 coin which I had for 10+ years. Based on recent appearances, I would rank this as the third most difficult date to acquire at this time.

1872 - My coin is a P12 CAC coin. I have been looking for a P45 coin, or even a P35 CAC to P40 CAC coin for quite a while. I will upgrade when the right piece comes along.

1873 - I have had this one for 11+ years. These appear less frequently can 1870 coins right now. I would rank this as the second toughest date at this time behind the 1878 CC $5. From a PCGS grading standpoint, there are 11 in P45 which 13 finer, compared to 16 finer than P45 for the 1870 CC $5.

1878 - This was the coin to finish the run. Mine is the Ashland City coin in P50 CAC. I just couldn't find one in P45 on the market. PCGS has 8 in 50, with 13 finer. CAC has 1 in 50 with 3 finer. Even though the PCGS populations are higher than the 1870 and 1873, these haven't seen the appearance frequency. The recent auction appearances were one at Great Collections this March in P20 CAC which sold for $6,505, one in an April Stacks Bower's sale in P35 CAC for $38,400, and this one which was in the same sale.

1881 - My coin is a P10 CAC. I have not found a suitable upgrade candidate in the 18 months that I have had this one. This date is a little tougher than one might think.

1891 - The most common date, but not readily available in P45 CAC. This coin is typically found in much higher condition.

I hope that you enjoy the read.
