Harmonic Coinvergence...Updated with interesting new specimen
Within the CBH series, I've been working simultaneously in a few different directions.
My main pursuit for awhile now has been altered pieces, more or less contemporary to the time when bust halves were commonly in use... engraved pieces, love tokens and countermarked and stamped coins.
Quality pieces in this category are few and far between, especially the rare stamps and the exquisitely engraved pieces. Also they tend to be pricey..
So, in the meantime I've started a holed date set.. And I've also returned to collecting slabbed pieces for a so called box-o-ten.
Requirements for the box are:
Superb eye appeal paired with some amount of early mint mishappery..
Dramatic cracks and clashes, goofy overdates of course, and any other neat "errors" I can find that are within my budget.
Oddly, there has been a fortuitous convergence between these areas for me recently, and today I'm stoked to find out that I won a couple of great coins for the "altered" set that also happen to fit nicely into the box of 10...
Here ya go 😀

Nice coins! Cool stamps too.

The counterstamp is well done and clearly a professional type punch was used - not the often encountered hand engraving. Those may be traceable... There is a publication on countermarks.... I may have it somewhere, not sure. At least I remember it being referenced here. Perhaps someone else will post the title. Cheers, RickO
I expected to see a Calculus lesson here. Working on Laplace Transforms today and convergence and divergence. Just got done with simple Harmonic motion.

I need to get my researching butt in gear and see if there is anything to discover about the "C" stamp... this is now my forth one 😅
It's a shame, but I still haven't chased down copies of the Brunk or Rulau reference books... if anyone has one to pass on, send a message!
I seem to recall reading some time ago that a prominent C counter mark on the face of the coin was to designate it as a counterfeit. I can't recall where I saw that and can't provide any references, but it may be a path to for some research (or I could be confusing it with something else
)
I don't think that's the case with these.. the 12/1 and the 17/3 are both slabbed.
The other two definitely have the veneer of honest old age to vouch for them...
I recall that certain gold coins at one point were stamped with a single letter to indicate that they were worn down enough to be significantly under weight.
Maybe an L?
Just ran across this on google. Have no idea anything about it or it's location. Only "C" counterstamped coin I have seen other than yours.

Huh.. looks similar to the 12/1
The other 3 stamps, 08, 17/3 and 18 all seem to be the same stamp.
Not sure about the 12/1, will be able to measure it and compare once I get it.
Usually these kind of renegades are just lumped in as one offs, but I've got to think there's something going on with this.
For me to locate 4 in a pretty short amount of time might indicate that alot of these where produced, and possibly for some reason..🤔
Here's an interesting twist to the tail.. this is from a forum member. Possibly sold last year at ANA..
Is it the same 1812/1 as the one above?
Same coin.....
It is... but what about the very different appearing toning?
Intrigued to say the least.
If the coin has been AT'd sometime in the last year, I have to re-think my ideas about
original color.. its quite natural looking in hand and has nice cartwheel luster for an XF 🤔
