My guess is it was a beauty.

I was watching that one, just out of curiosity. For reference, PCGS Guide for a 67 of that date/mm is $135.

Also, here’s the coin in question, AU58+:

Superb collections are built more by omission than by addition.

Maybe someone is building one in anticipation. Looks like a Pop 1.

Time to pull out the old Dansco. I haven't checked those Jeff's in the past few years! 😂 🤣 🫣

I'd say the + did it. Only pop of 1 PCGS. Nice color also.

I'm guessing the winning bidder saw the BST ad: https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1075250/selling-au58-1940-d-jefferson-nickel-on-ebay-10-day-auction-top-pop-for-everyman-registry-sets#pagetop

This was my coin- there isn't an everyman set for Jeff's but there are a few type sets with a Jeff slot. A lot of the top sets only had an AU58 in that slot and AU58+ is a surprisingly tough grade to land. With all of that said I was very pleasantly surprised with the hammer price- I was expecting $300-$400. Definitely check your Danscos!

au58+ has been bringing stratospheric premiums for a LONG time now. even harder to attain than po01.

i THINK it was GC, if you search their archives for au58+, brace yourself.
