GTG: 1923-S Peace Dollar (grade posted bottom)

I’ve had this 1923-S Peace Dollar for 15+ years. It still resides in the older ANACS holder and the coin has remained very stable over the years. The photo exaggerates the yellow/brownish color on the reverse
This is a two part question. What is the grade of the coin in the ANACS holder? If I were to submit it to PCGS how would they grade it?

I'd venture that ANACS has it as 66 and PCGS would give it a 64 or 65. The reverse strike looks weak, but that could just be the color and pic. Pretty coin though.
I believe that, while a beautiful Peace $, the scratches in the fields on the obverse and the scratches above the ONE on the reverse it would be held to an MS63 by PCGS as would be ANACS. I think the toning is covering similar scratches on the reverse.

Lots of small marks as Jim pointed out. I too will guess it's a 63.
Guessing 63 in the current holder and 63 at PCGS.
I would say 64
Interesting. That reverse looks really chewed up although the marks are kind of hidden in the photo. I’m guessing 61 ANACS and 62 PCGS.

I'll guess 63 now, 62 PCGS.

I can see it as a 63+, What ANACS graded it at is a guess at 63 maybe 64

I would grade that at a 63.... Not sure about ANACS..... Cheers, RickO

I like the coin and the image... The questions are difficult for a whole host of reasons. We have a tough date in 65 and higher. I do not see ANACs or PCGS grading it at that level. From where I sit, the coin has positive characteristics and I would grade it in the lower 1/3 at MS64. I suspect ANACS graded the coin as a 64 and I would agree with them if they did. It is a terrific coin for the date... seriously.
As for a PCGS grade... I am not certain if they would see or view this coin as favorably as I do. And I tend to doubt that they would. But in all fairness... PCGS may look at this in contrast to the regular run of the mill 23-s which are just not overly appealing and grade it a 64....but my percentage guess for them would be 63+
Not sure this is what you want to hear... I think I would leave this one in the ANACS holder because it just looks good for what it is.

Near gem; surfaces just are not smooth enough to be a full 65.

Probably an ANACs 64, from photo, hard to tell if PCGS would grade 62 or 63.
ANACS 64. PCGS 63

Welcome to the forum
It appears to be a solid 63 to my old eyes.
65 anacs, 64 pcgs

Looks like a 64 on my small screen.
I'd venture a 63 in the old Anacs holder and still a 63 today (PCGS, NGC, or Anacs).
That's a great looking 23 S and I could see it in 65 max. in the Anacs holder and 64+ at PCGS.
Thanks for playing.
I’m going to leave the coin alone. It’s a very nice coin but I think the likelihood of it grading higher at PCGS is slim. The coin has several small scratches on the breast which will limit the grade and there’s a big jump in price between 64 and 65 which won’t help things. There’s also something going on above the “O” in one. I think PCGS would probably grade it a 63 or maybe a 64 because of positive eye appeal. Financially there’s no compelling reason for me to cross the coin.
