Corroded surfaces - probably acid etched Or something similar
Thank you much for your assessment, it means a lot! Happy Saturday! I thought it looked a little off.

Steve
Maybe I can get it, run it over a few times and repost it as a 87/97 discovery piece

the reverse was improperly cropped. the metal is still there just not in the image.
there is a market for these (sporadic) as it is a VERY popular series in my experience, yes, even corroded/otherwise damaged. whether acid or corrosion, it is nice and even (there are many worse, like with shield nickels) and while there are a lot of members that give the good advice to buy nice coins, there is a huge segment that buys stuff like this (nothing wrong with it), just like anything, gotta buy it right. i've sold hundreds of corroded pre-1900 v nicks, especially pre-1890. they are popular and get pricey quite quick.
to each their own but i'd advise someone with just a little interest and a modest budget to buy stuff like this over the counterfeit counterparts that look nice (problem free early dates are tough to get bought right, just like all early us type coins). at least stuff like this is authentic and can be resold if patient and timed right to the market. at coin cubs/shows etc, probably can do some good trading if there are others in the same arena.
i've rarely seen the area of dealers tables that have the boxes setting out for anyone to stop and look/buy not be busy. those are usually the bulk lower priced coins. often times nice stuff can be found in them. errors, toners, varieties, solid for the price coins, cheaper damaged better dates etc.
I thought it was interesting enough to bid and win this one.

I had messaged the seller asking if this was a stock photo or not. Never got a reply before it ended. Please Let me know how it looks in hand.

Will do.
I've always had success with this seller.

Obvious serious environmental damage of some sort.
Looks as if there were surface issues someone tried to fix, and left too long in an acid dip. JMO. Cheers, RickO
