Trying a little experiment...

So, I finally got a 2021 Peace Dollar from my best buddy... One little thing though... Its an error, a struck thru Peace Dollar. I recently looked on eBay, and a coin similar to mine, just more extreme, sold for $1,500. Well, I've valued mine at $1,000 comparing it. So, I've decided to do a little experiment to increase the value that much more. I saw someone do a similar thing a while ago, where they took a coin, stuck it in an old envelope, and sat it in a windowsill for 6-9 months and it toned beautifully... I've decided I'm going to try that, seeing as how I live in Texas with high humidity and heat, it should tone faster... I'm excited... And for those of you who wanna see the Peace Dollar, I'll post a separate thread later tonight after I get a phone

Looks as if you are beginning a career as a coin doctor.... :D Long ways to your degree, but profitable if done well. ;) Cheers, RickO

The chances of this turning out bad are quite high, it's probably best if you try to "protect" the coin in the OGP instead of going the mis-guided route of thinking you can improve its appearance.

These aren't 90% like the originals, they are .999, so you might get something unexpected, or nothing at all.
I don't think that strike-through adds any value at all, it may actually discount the piece as a defect.

It’s just not major enough to bring a premium and I also agree that collectors may view it as a detractor to the surfaces.

Collectors of these want perfect coins, or you need major errors to attract error collectors. This coin unfortunately fits neither category from what I can see.

So, why wouldnt it add value… its not like there a very many of these errors…

There are a TON of minor strike throughs on those issues. Minor strike throughs decrease value, they don't increase it. As many as 20% of the ones I had had such minor strike throughs and I had to sell them at a discount to get rid of them. They are COMMON. MAJOR strike throughs or unusual occlusions are a different story.

Second of all, any sulfur-paper induced toning on a 2021 coin will not make it into a slab at a grading service and will be treated as AT (market unacceptable) by most of the coin market. It will be patently obvious to anyone that it was done intentionally as modern coins do not tone that quickly under ambient conditions.

But, it's your coin, feel free to experiment.

Feel free to start a thread about the ethics of this.

strike-throughs are a funny thing. It seems there is a "critical size" at which below that threshold they are either ignored or hurt value, but larger than that size they are considered a desirable error.
I'm sure @ErrorsOnCoins can give us all a class on it.

If you can get someone who is stupid enough to pay for an "error" like that take the money and run!

I consider it to be a defective coin that should be sold at a sharp discount.

    All glory is fleeting.

Probably not enough of a strikethrough to have much of a premium... but who knows??

It is all about the size and shape and the look of the strike thru.

I am writing an article about strike thru error coins for the next edition of Mint Error News :)

I am no peace dollar expert... but for some reason I am wary of the coin. Is it even genuine??

Yeah, it is, why do you ask?

I see nothing wrong with it to doubt its authenticity.

I guess i shouldve known, if i didnt want the hard truth i shouldnt have posted this coin :/ … it was a gift from my best friend so ill never get rid of it… that sucks though… oh well, thanks guys for the information, it never hurts to learn :)

No shame, it would be worse of us to let you think it's worth a lot and then find out somewhere else that it isn't.
Still a super cool gift from your friend. I had to buy one of these on the secondary market since I missed the release.

I would not want it, toned or not. I expect a modern issue to be flawless (or 69).
    bob :)
PS: I too did that with Morgan dollars. Had about 5 tubes of uncirculated dollars. Left to tone for 2 years, nada. Yep, nothing happened. It appears my attempt at doctoring was a F.

I am curious to see what the $1500 one looks like. Do you have a link?

Speaking of your experiment… I stuck this on a wood shelf in my basement for about 6 months.
