Type 1 blank or Type 2?

gumby1234gumby1234 Posts: 5,591 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looks like a type 1 blank clad Ike to me. It has less surface abrasions than most blanks I have seen. Maybe a proof blank? Opinions please. Thanks in advance.

Abrasions are irrelevant for type 1 versus type 2.

I'm not positive yours is a blank planchet at all. If it is, it's type 1 but I really can't be sure from the pictures.

No raised rim so it's not a Type 2.

@PerryHall I thought type 2 was with a raised rim?

Some clearer photos and a shot of the edge for @jonathanb

I forgot the word "not". You are of course correct.

In the second set of pictures, there does appear to be a raised rim - at least on one side. Cheers, RickO

@ricko one side does appear to be very slightly raised, but the other side not at all. The edge doesn't look like it was squished to make the type 2. Its confusing for sure.

It looks like a punched out blank before it was sent to upset and given the raised edge, Like I said before how many of these pieces get pass Quality Control, not many so yours is special no matter what, Enjoy.

@1Bufffan I know the cent blanks are super common. The mint gives them out to visitors and to boy scouts for their Coin collecting badge. Any idea if my blank Ike might be for a proof? It looks smoother and has less marks than a usual blank.

I am personally unsure if it is a blank planchet at all. On one side the rim looks upset and the other it doesn’t.

To my knowledge there is no way to differentiate between proof and business blanks.

@Kilao there have been proof blanks or planchets certified so there must be a way to differentiate. Mine is definitely a blank or planchet. I dont own a scale. I've had this for well over 30 years now.

I borrowed a scale from a friend. It weighs 22.59

That's a reasonable weight for an Ike Dollar blank. It might be worth getting this one slabbed, as long as the diameter matches also. Type I Ike Dollar blanks are worth more than most other clad blanks, possibly in the $150 range. Type II Ike planchets are more common.

The only difference I can think of is the high polish of a planchet before it is struck which means it would have to be a T2. Neat item nonetheless.
