Enjoy it while you can, before the oils and salts in your skin attack the surface.
Rinse in acetone and then seal it in an airtite - without touching it with bare hands again. Cheers, RickO
For me it is like watching someone scratch a chalk board with their fingernails - please please please hold coins only by the edges!! (especially when posting to fellow coin collectors!).
Just to make this point, with my son looking on, I had two really nice uncirculated RED 64 cents - fresh from original bank roll. I touched one briefly with my finger over the obverse and left the other one untouched. Then we sealed them in air-tites and to this very day you can still see where I touched it - and on that very spot it went from red to brown. I’ll forward the pic when I get home. It was a great lesson for my son and shows just how sensitive coins (especially cents!) can be to human skin.
EEEEEEEK! What a once nice coin.

Hello RickO, does it matter what kind of acetone we use? There is a few different kinds and I've never used anything on my coins before so wanted to double check
It is great that you like the coin, but your handling coins like you do is ruining them. Also please stop posting a hundred of the same photo, one photo of the obv and one of the rev is plenty.

@Dallife.... Yes, it can make a difference which type of acetone you use. You must get the 100% pure acetone... Available at hardware stores, Home Depot, Lowes etc.... This will remove organic deposits of all types (including your skin oils). Use a container with a top (it will evaporate quickly), and after one bath, give it a second one... Let air dry and put in container. Handle with gloves... Not plastic, acetone will dissolve those gloves. Acetone should be handled in a well ventilated or open area due to fumes. Cheers, RickO
Thank you so much!!
Thank you all for the info and the funny comments. I shall invest in some latex gloves. Also what's an airtight and where can I get some? ✌️☺️

I use cheap cotton gloves when I need to handle an expensive coin. Other than that I use soap and water and wash my hands before handling without gloves. Hold by edges and no worries. No need going expensive because the gloves end up dirty, so go cheap and toss when soiled and get a new pair: https://www.ebay.com/itm/273038282414?hash=item3f92598eae:g:Qy8AAOxy~dNQ-BBw
With that in mind, very specifically do NOT use nail polish remover, which usually has some moisturizers or other additives that are harmful to coins and make it not 100% acetone (acetone isn't something where concentration is lowered with something theoretically neutral like water).

Thank you for the information, really appreciate it 😊 going to try getting some from Home Depot today!
@Dallife
You should get along well with us. Stick around.
You passed the first test without blowing up and you listened to our advice.
That alone gets you a plus.
I can speak for the members here when I say a big "WELCOME".

Thanks for giving us a hand ...(what?),... looks like the coin was hand carved as many cameo's ( in jewelry ) are created.

There's other dates, colors, and designs that may peek your interest level during the hunt.
Me ? The S mint mark looks so sexy.
Got a lite ?
After handling your 1968s cent like that.

Will probably make it turn into this!

Thanks for all the comments again. I'm more knowledgeable about how to handle and clean coins. So, anyone think I should get it graded. Also, how much would you estimate it's value, fellas?
I love you all ~Spec ✌️
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
Should I get it graded? No. Value? 25 cents.
@MarkKelley no way. It's worth more than that. It has to be. I've seen lesser grades sell for hundreds

Good luck. I've got several rolls of 'em.
With this toning?

Keep staring and stop typing.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
Then stop posting pictures of it here and ship it off to PCGS.
P.S. - have a box of tissues ready when you open the package from PCGS.
Toning doesn't add mint state points.
I don't have money to ship the PCGS

Happens all the time, I could not count all the coins that have gotten a grade or two bump for color. Having said that, I'm not suggesting that the op's coin would get such a bump, it is not that special.

In all seriousness... why did you ask the question if the answer doesn't matter to you?
Do not use latex gloves.
Use 100% cotton gloves. Always clean cotton gloves. Copper and silver react to a lot of compounds that your eyes cannot see.
What about for the acetone bath? I've never seen that mentioned.
Why, thank you, buddy!
It's a proof.
It only end up grading pf 64 BN
I Thought for sure it would grade a 66 or higher! Plus, Brown???
Yes, I too love the tone.
Looks more like a fire Red, doesn't it?
Thanks again.

I don't use it but I think there are wooden tweezers or similar instruments.
If the fumes don't get you, the explosion will.
The ones selling for hundreds are in the ultra high grades. Coins like that are not found in circulation.
Currently an MS-65 is listed at $2 on the PCGS Priceguide. What grade do you think yours is?
He's just fishing for a buyer. He thinks one of us will pay him $800 for the coin.
This thread is spam for a coin he has listed for sale on the BST:

If this coin is worth so much, maybe consider taking out a loan to get it graded.
I don’t know how you can tell the grade from those photos. Photos like that won’t show hairlines and often don’t show diminished mirrors, both of which can drastically affect the grade. As for the color, BN is anything that isn’t original mint red. The obverse has some mint red, but the reverse is entirely brown. It’s perhaps a lIner RB, but BN isn’t surprising.
It’s also a proof. There are almost no marks or blemishes showing in the photos apart from a tiny partial print. To get a 64, there’s something significant going on that isn’t showing. That’s very common for proofs and how they photograph.
About 1 yr ago. Oh well. That's ok. The tone, is the best part.
Thanks
