Reconsidering my 7070 Type Set... Again...

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,169 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hello Everyone, I'm sure other collectors have been in a similar headspace when coming to the completion of a set. I'm coming down to the last 10 or so coins for my 7070 and I'm just not super excited about finishing it. I have most of the higher value coins, but I've recently been more enamored with my Early Copper pursuits than finishing the Type Set. I'll likely complete the set... I'm so close and this is my third attempt... but I'm not sure what I'll do with it when I'm done. Don't get me wrong, I really like the coins I've purchased, but this particular type set seems very heavy on Seated Liberty type. I like the design, but there are at least 3 representations for both Quarters and Halves. Also, the last page of Bicentennial, Commemorate Halves, and bullion pieces just seems out of place...

So, after you complete a set... what do you do with it? I've completed many an album... kept a few, but others I simply divested my self of to fund other projects. My 1909-1940 Lincoln Date/MM set springs to mind... getting a nice 1909-S VDB was the crowning coin, but so very anticlimactic. I held onto it for a couple of years, but never went back to it after completion. I don't think my 7070 will give me the same vibe...

There is an additional Gold Page that you can purchase and fill which could be exciting (maybe DOGs, or branch mints, lovetokens??)

I haven't completed mine yet (been having the book for about ten years) and have changed the direction of it a few times...

What ever you decide, I hope you have fun in the process...

It's all about what the people want...

I just keep completed sets to enjoy from time to time.... I stopped doing sets about ten or so years ago.... now I just collect 'pretty metal discs'.... :D;) Cheers, RickO

    @ricko ... I like that approach!

If you were very passionate about your type set, I'd recommend for you to go back and start upgrading all the coins in it, but since it sounds like you care more about your early copper, that's probably the best way to spend your money. I personally don't have this problem because I'm building a set that will take decades to complete, which is part of the reason I chose it. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I finished my album probably 5 or 6 years ago and spent the next few years upgrading some I was not happy with. I have a few left to upgrade still but lost the desire to do so. I still enjoy looking at the album from time to time but every coin in there has been viewed over & over and though they are pretty nice, they are very familiar.
I haven't been tempted to sell it off just yet because I put so much effort into it but at the same time, it doesn't give me the satisfaction that it once did.
Long way to say, I guess I know how you're feeling.

Of any sets one can put together I would think a type set would be the most enjoyable to continue to own! After all it's not the same design one after another. There are also many branches of a 7070 set you can follow.

I can sort of relate in a way, when I finished my 09-58 Lincoln set it was a great feeling getting over that finish line but it also sort of leaves you with the question of what is next.

I think it is fair to say that for many collectors the thrill is in the hunt more so than the holding, especially true for big long date/mm sets. If upgrading is not part of the plan, and your interest has waned then perhaps selling to fund early copper newps is a great option.

You could try a Library of Coins type set ;) Good luck

Wow... a Library of Coins Type set is quite the undertaking! I likely wouldn't do that set for the same reasons I gave up on the Whitman Small Denomination Type set of US Coins when I was 13 yo... I knew I'd never have a 1793 Half Cent... 93 Chain Cent... 1796 Quarter... etc., etc.... I've cracked quite a few coins for my 7070, but I've got to draw the line somewhere!!

That would be an amazing album to see though.

I always loved the look of a complete Dansco Type Set. (No gold) For years, I thought a complete type set was out of reach for my. I just saved, stayed focused and finally completed a set. I'm completing (what I consider) various legacy sets, to be (hopefully) passed down to the kids and grand kids.

Like @CentSearcher siad; you might consider upgrading. I upgraded my set along the way to make it look consistent. I also intentionally purchased some lower grade coins, just to make the set look the way I like it. I even added a custom page in the back of the album for the more modern type coins, that were not a part of the original album.

    Good luck.

Can we see pictures of where you're at with your set?

My type set will always be a work in progress- it will likely never be complete but I still enjoy it for what it is. I like the older Whitman blue two volume set- one of my Whitman type set albums (blue bookshelf two volume set) predates the Kennedy Half.

My interests have moved in many different directions- most if not all of my coin interests have been very enjoyable- but I have not lost sight or interest in type coins.

I love my 7070, and purchased many of the coins over 25 years ago.

I wished there were more slots for at least the more attainable early coins. But that didn’t stop me from buying some of them. In my mind they’re still part of the set, even if technically not in the album.

Yeah, that's a little of what prompted me to do a Box of 20... at least a few coins will be 18th C Type.

It's a bit tougher than I thought to get images of all the coins together in the album... here are a few of the coins I've imaged out of the album... Pardon my lack of photography skills and cr@ppy lighting set-up... Here are a few of the highlights...

Man, there's nothing wrong with those coins!! Beautiful straight graded, problem free coins for a type set!! Love the cud on that 04 half cent! If the rest of your set looks like these, I don't need to see them........you cracked the 7070 code!! 👍🏻 👍🏻

    EDIT: Perfect pictures BTW!!
