50th year of coin collecting, here is one coin I looked for back in 1972...

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,630 ✭✭✭✭✭

And 50 years later, finally got one! Not in change like I was doing back in 1972 though. I figured I would get a nice 1972 doubled die for my 50th coin collecting anniversary. Did anyone here ever find this one in change?

Not me. I had heard that Tebo Coin in Boulder Colorado had bag(s) of them.
I bought mine from Redwood Coins back in 76 or 77.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I looked for one for decades before I bought one 40 years ago from JJ Teaparty in a sealed flip - described as an MS 64. Submitted it to PCGS in 1988 and was happy with the MS65 red result.

I found a lesser variety of the 72DD back in that time. I was ecstatic.

EF: That's a sweet coin to pick up finally after 50yrs. That's the thing about collecting for the long haul, patience pays off over time and the wait makes it that much more satisfying once you attain what you're after.

Now about that Pan Pac Octagon...

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

That is a strong coin. Most of these are muted.

With my luck I would find the Walmart parking lot variety, and I can’t even find that.

I've CRH'ed a couple dozen of the lesser varieties, but never the biggie.

I can still picture that iconic cover of COINage magazine proclaiming "new discovery".

I even got my hands on a bag that year. I wasn't looking for the minors at that time, but never found the big one.

Thanks for all the props and comments! It's a nice personal accomplishment for me to be able to acquire one of these, even if it wasn't from change. One thing I noticed in the PCGS price guide is that the FS-104 variety appears to be the most valuable. I looked at the images for this one and all I can say is B-O-R-I-N-G! Maybe it is the rarer variety, but I'll take the one with the cool doubling over the minor doubling.

I wouldn't put much stock in that, there is no sales history for that variety other than the single ebay "record" sale.

That die 4 variety is the only one I've never had.

I broke down and bought one raw back in the 1980's. Sent it in to PCGS and got a 64RD on it.

Seems like a lot of the obverses suffer from dings and dangs, and is the reason my coin didn't 65.
