Good evening to all,
I'm an italian coin collector from Trento. I registerd about one year ago but never posted messages at today.I've been starting a collection of Kennedy's half dollars by years and Mints, a few months ago.
Some days ago I found a very scarce piece dated 1971 never seen, struck in Cupro-Nickel with a small P (for Philadelphia MInt) under JFK bust instead of the common D (for Denver MInt. I did a lot of researches but I didn't find any information or similar pieces on the web, neither on my coin catalogs.
I'd like to know if there is somebody that knows this coin and can help me with some information.
Furthermore ,if you need I could provide also a clear picture of the coin in a few days as I'm waiting my new reflex. Thanks a lot at the moment. Juan

Based on its overall appearance, your coin is a counterfeit.

Altered date or counterfeit ; the striking diagnostics are more similar to issues from 1995 to the present than the 1971 issue.

  • I understand, I will also have to check the weight but the coin is not in my hands now because I am moving home and I have no possibility to take it and weigh it now but I will do it as soon as possible. Thank you at the moment.

It is fake mo matter what it weighs. It has the general detail and relief of the later (1990s) issues.

A neat coin and maybe worth several dollars atleast, to a collector of modern counterfeits.

  • I think you're really right as I just found now an article on "COINtalk about a similar and pictured type described as a fake.

@Israelicoins ... Welcome aboard. Your coin is definitely a counterfeit Kennedy half dollar. Even the image of JFK has many points that differ from an original (Hair on top of head totally wrong, eyes and mouth not right etc.). Cheers, RickO

It has the look of a 3-inch-diameter novelty piece

Hair is awful, unlike any Kennedy half I know of. Definitely a counterfeit.

This is kind of neat, a modern counterfeit of an average coin. I am curious why someone would even bother to do this. It would make a great conversation piece. Oddly it looks more like Reagan than Kennedy.

I'd be curious about what the edge looks like.

the anemic neck of the chicken on the reverse is interesting.

I have seen this before - it’s a JFK “token” with Ronald Reagan on the obverse. I don’t think it was meant as a counterfeit as much as a novelty.

when you see crap like this ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake about it; it is no.....holds.....barred!

anyone remember seeing common-date wheats/mems on alibaba years ago?

i ALMOST posted it to just have a laugh but we've all seen enough crap that i found it unnecessary. yes, a jefferson nickel made of plastic with the word COPY in huge letters on it. (found in the spare tire compartment on the inside back part of the van along the wall, not the floor) i guess i shouldn't complain TOO much since it at least had copy on it in raised letters, incused are preferred. someone could grind down those letters and try to pass it off as a rare plastic ddo, never seen before. :D

Is it just me or does that look more like a young Ronald Reagan than J.F.K.?

    Not IMO.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
