Modern Abraided die coins. Missing Railings: over polished die, minor variety 1971 D Nickel

I remember then forget this variety every few years and finally nabbed a graded example. It is a minor variety and not too difficult to locate any given day on ebay or anywhere a variety hunter might view multiple examples. It would seem the reverse die was over polished and resulted in the “deletion” of the balcony rails on the roof of Monticello. I do not see obvious evidence of a die clash however, both sides exhibit heavy die polish lines.

For an easy to spot die marker there is a die gouge noticeable with the naked eye between the T and S of Cents. The missing rails are also easily seen with the naked eye.

Glad I learned about this minor error. Always nice to watch for something different. Thanks for sharing. Peace Roy

Wow, there are so many to choose from. Thanks for letting us know. Picked up a fairly nice one today.

There's an old thread on this variety somewhere. Nice find!

@Aspie_Rocco, didn’t know this thread existed, but stirred a memory of a coin I found in circulation in 1971 or 1972. Here’s the one I put away almost 55 years ago because it was missing design elements on the reverse. Are these pretty common? Is there a demand for them or no interest? Thanks Zack.

They do not seem to have a premium yet, not sure if they will gain traction like a 3 leg, still these 71 D are unique for the missing features.

This would need a lot of promotion and need to be recognized as a variety by the major TPG's for it to have enough of a following or any significant impact on value. Neat, but I imagine there are very few that would even know or care about it at this point.

In all honesty, I did not even see where the issue was until it was pointed out.

The floating roof Lincoln cents are more apparent and interesting, at least to me. 🤷‍♂️. And even those are really just a curiosity.

I do not promote it as an investment, but more for newer collectors to learn something about abraded dies and be able to find them in the wild, or their own collections.
I still think it is a cool variety with super low prices readily available in high quality.
